  • 1.  What are the best resources to teach myself structural steel design?

Hie everyone. I want to develop my design skills as I didn't get the opportunity to work with a design consultancy during my internship. I want to learn more about structural steel designs and connections on my own. Do you have any recommendations about any books, software and other resources I can use to help teach myself?

AISC has design guides (https://www.aisc.org/publications/design-guides/design-guide-pdfs/) and example problems (https://www.aisc.org/globalassets/aisc/manual/v15.1-companion/v15.1_vol-1_design-examples.pdf) that follow the Steel Construction Manual and expand upon its info.  I believe both might be free to AISC members.

For a textbook, I use Steel Structures Design and Behavior by Salmon, Johnson and Malhas (https://www.amazon.com/Steel-Structures-Design-Behavior-5th/dp/0131885561).

    Sweto,

AISC (American Institute of Steel Construction) has Design Guides and Manual Companion (Design Examples and Tables). In their Continuing Education section, their is relevant to almost everything related steel construction. Take a look and use the search tab "connections" <https://www.aisc.org/search/?query=connections&pageSize=10&page=1>

From your question it appears you would like to self-study in the subjects of Structural Steel  and Connection Design. My recommendation is that, as a starting point, you could use the following reference material :

    1) Unified Design of Steel Structures
        by Louis F. Geschwindner
             Third Edition
    2) Structural Steel Design
    by Jack C. McCormac
          Sixth Edition
    3) AISC American Institute of Steel Construction Manual 15th Edition
Note that you do not need both references 1) and 2). Those are for FYI only. Personally, I would recommend reference 1) to a beginner. reference 3) is a must; you need to have the AISC Manual to perform calculations in compliance with the current codes.
When you get more familiar with these topics, you probably should consider to join the AISC organization which is the leader professional society in the subjects of steel and connection design.
If you have anymore questions please let me know. Good Luck!

Are you trying to prepare for an interview, to apply for jobs, or something else? I know some firms will train newbies with undergrad degrees, and others that don't want to do so. You may not learn what is relevant by studying by yourself, especially where local codes and practices are a big part of the job.

We need only steel design codes, after studying the theory, limit state design is now predominant, for a tension members allowable stress need be known, with area for load is found. General bending equations must have to understand. M/I=F/y=E/R , stress due to moment can be calculated. Connections like Bolt, rivet and weld are studied.

Dear Mufaro, as a professor in undergraduate and graduate courses on the Design of steel structures, I found this information valuable for my students (different from the listed for our colleagues previously):

    Enjoy!
