  • 1.  Use of Bolted Doubler Plates for Steel Columns

    Hello ,

On a revamp project while analyzing for increased forces, I came across a case where a doubler plate is required in column to safeguard against excessive web panel zone shear. However, as it is a modification work, welding is not a preferred option as it requires several precautions to be done safely in an operating plant. Other options of adding haunches / braces are all not feasible.

Has anyone used a 'Bolted web doubler plate' or heard of it ? I looked at some guidelines available from AISC but could not find any literature about this.

Any experience / guidance on the above will be very helpful. Thanks in advance.

I have never done this and I do not know of any sources on it.  I would say, design it as a welded doubler plate. Determine the kip/in capacity of the weld or the shear strength of the plate. Then determine what you need to achieve the desired kip/in using bolts.

You may end up with a longer plate than if you used weld. I would say that it is essentially a shear flow calculation and you could apply that approach to it.

    Dear Rushikesh Trivedi,
For rehabilitation of base plate, according to the components of this section have several acceptance criteria, you must better use FEMA 356 codec for rehabilitation in this case if you use any method, you can categorize its behavior.
