    Hello all,

Any suggestion on the type of connection to be used to connect a wood beam on the face of an HSS steel grade 60 ksi column? The beam is bolted for the erection purposes.

Weld a shear tab on to the face of the tube column.  Slot the wood beam for the shear plate and use through bolts.

Thank you Michael! One of the other ways the beam should be pushed into that U slot. I would rather use one bolt through U connection, at a time. This is normal with that type of connection. There might  be no problem with connection  but in composition capacity of wood and steel to be looked up.

One of the most common connections for this condition is a U shaped bracket or beam seat welded to the face of the column. It has vertical side plates spaced just a bit wider then the beam so the beam can slide down between. The horizontal seat is welded to the side plates and sometimes the column as well. The seat plate is often sized for thickness based on crushing strength of the wood beam. The side plates can be extended along the face of the beam if bolts are desired for taking tension loads along the length of the beam as in the case a of a drag strut.
