    Dear Sir,

I'm a final year student of M.Tech (Specialization in Forensic Structural Engineering) studying at Gujarat Forensic Sciences University, Gandhinagar,Gujarat, India. As a part of my dissertation topic titled :-
"Comparative Study of confined masonry structure and in-filled masonry RC Structure",

    I have the following questions:

    • Which countries have guidelines for confined masonry structure design (In India we don't have any guideline for confined masonry structure design)?
    • Is it possible for me to design a confined masonry structure in E-TAB software?
    • What is the best software for design of confined masonry?
    • Is there any special precaution that should be considered during the design?
    • What is the reason for failure of confined masonry structure?
    • Is earthquake resisting of confined masonry structure is more then normal RC structure?
I have attach a small summary of my dissertation topic. Other idea's are most welcome. You can also email me at indrajitsodha13@...

DETERMINATION OF STRENGTH AND CAPACITY OF MASONRY UNIT: APPROPRIATE CONSTITUENTS MIX RATIO

Masonry has high compressive strength under vertical loads but has low tensile strength (against twisting or stretching) unless reinforced. The tensile strength of masonry walls can be increased by thickening the wall, or by building masonry piers (vertical columns or ribs) at intervals.

The Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI), including the World Housing Encyclopedia, are good resources for confined masonry. See the following EERI Public Policy statement, white paper and additional links.

Dear Indrajit, we have a Law in Colombia that covers all structural topics (Seismicity, Loads, Concrete design, Steel Design, Masonry Design, Wood Structures design, etc.). It is called NSR-10. Chapter D (NSR-10, Chapter D) comprises Masonry design and helps you to identify material parameters for computational modeling. Some software that can help you <g data-gr-id="39" id="39" class="gr_ gr_39 gr-alert gr_gramm Grammar multiReplace">modeling</g> this type of components are STAAD PRO, CYPE. Remember that masonry should be checked with care in high seismicity zones.
