    Which section of the steel could yield the maximum compression strength in a column and make a column which could resist the maximum axial compression also it may be of any shape?

    In general, you need to design a column to resist all of the loads imposed on the column.  Pipe and tube columns are generally the strongest to resist compressive axial loads and resist moments in the x and y axis, however, beam connections are difficult to frame into the columns and corrosion can be a potential problem.  Compact wide flange beams are the best H shape beams for axial loading and are easy to frame beams into the webs or flanges of the column, however, they are not as good as pipe or tube columns for compressive loading.  Pipe, Tubular, and H shaped columns are normally the shapes used for columns in buildings and other structures.  Angles, channels, and tees are used as columns for stair platforms, supporting horizontal and vertical vessels, and tall towers for flares and communications.  The best shape for a column is determined by what the column is used for.

    Cold Formed Steel Column Sections follow AISI Standards, since they are much thinner than hot rolled steel column sections, they will tend to be controlled by "Local Buckling" .... "Web Crippling", you may also have to take into account any holes that may be spaced along the height of the column ....     Dear Ashwin,

    The best section for steel columns are Wide flange sections (W) (HEA or HEB in Europe). As Kenneth stated, you should look for sections with almost the same second moment or area around each axis so you will not have any preferred buckling direction (HSS are the best but they have connection issues). That is why standard shapes (S) (IPE in Europe) are not so common for columns but for beams, where you have a preferred axis (strong axis).
