    Greetings,

Based on all the aggressive agents present in a Wastewater Treatment Plant, what type and degree of affectation can steel structures suffer, besides sulfide and chloride attack?

    Hello Ing. Guzman:

Wastewater processes will also expose steel to acid and base on extreme ends of pH scale and GRIT and EROSION.   Recommend talking to Metallurgists, industrial coating specialists and Chemical Engineers and engaging with Steel Structures Painting Council in Pennsylvania to assist in defining the required alloys and composition, coating, galvanic treatments or systems and surface preparation and how to do both the field and factory quality control.  I worked over 4 years in the field on wastewater plants in Hawaii. By far, the coating systems, connection durability, and application were the most complicated part of the design and construction.  Good luck.  Tim Twomey, PE

Dear Tim, thank you for your message. I will check about grit and erosion. I did not consider these factores until now.
