    Hello everyone,
I am Dibya jyoti Basu and I am a second year undergraduate student in construction engineering at Jadavpur University, India. This is my first post on this section and I am pretty much new on ASCE. Actually today I would like to ask you something related to information technology and construction industry researches right now. Can anybody tell me how much do construction companies use this technology right now or the use of AR and VR in construction industries are still not a huge in number? And why it people has used augmented reality over virtual reality in this field cause personally I think virtual reality can solve the purpose of construction industries other than using virtual reality. I have immense interest in this field. If anybody can help me then it would be really help me.And can anybody suggest me any research programme related to AR and VR  then it would be helpful for me. Thank you.

    Dear Dibya,

Most of the construction industry is traditionally very slow to adopt new technologies. Some bigger companies will use VR/AR but the main issue is that with where the technology stands you cannot use VR/AR in the production cycle from scratch to finish. Right now, engineering companies will use AR over VR because it is easier to use. VR detaches you from the physical environment and that is a big drawback. That is not to say that VR does not have it's place, it does, but the headsets are awkward to say the least.

At my company we are at the forefront of AR/VR in geotechnical engineering, that is by choice rather than by commercial application. On the software side, developing in AR/VR takes time with uncertain return. It is seen as a toy and not a necessity. So, one has to play the long run and see that in ten years things will be different. This is some of the work that we have done.
