Temporary Works in Construction Discussion Group

  • 1.  Use of ASCE37-14 with ASCE7-16

Hello!  A question come up recently regarding the combined use of ASCE37-14 and ASCE7-16.   ASCE37-14 specifically references ASCE7-10.  It is not recommended to mix and match codes.  However there is always a desire to use the "latest" applicable code reference.  As such, we have seen an increase in the combined use of ASCE37-14/ASCE7-16.   Would you consider this to be acceptable, or should all work for temporary design follow ASCE7-10 until ASCE37 is updated to reference the later code?

An official answer to this type of question can be requested ( I think) by sending the question via e-mail to Jon Esslinger, Director, Codes and Standards, at jesslinger@... .  He will forward the question to the Chair of the ASCE/SEI 37 committee who will share it with the Chapter Chair of the related chapter, in this case the Chapter 6.Chair.  Sometimes this happens fast and sometimes it can take longer.

An unofficial answer is that ASCE/SEI 37, Standard paragraph 1.4 Alternate Criteria for Design Loads during Construction and Commentary paragraph C1.4, address this situation.  If the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) requires a different code or standard to be applied, or if you wish to use an alternative source that is acceptable to the AHJ, it is permitted with cautions as noted in these paragraphs.  Several examples of alternative sources are listed in C1.4, but other sources could be considered as well.
