    Hello everyone!

As the date to make our way to Orlando quickly approaches, I wanted to take a minute and help all of you who are attending the Structures Congress for the first time!

I want to start by saying this has quickly become one of my favorite conferences to attend, and after attending the last two, I feel like there is still a lot more to learn about how to make the best out of this experience.

Here are four tips that I think you will find useful during the conference:

    - Bring your business cards - You will meet A LOT of new people. I have found that by giving them your contact information you can start creating a really solid business network. This is really important to develop your own career as well as collaborate on different topics of interest.

    -  Download the conference App on your phone - The last thing you want to do is trying to figure out what sessions to attend last minute. I like to see all the sessions in one place, pick the ones that I like, and add them to my calendar with all the information I need to find my way to the room. Fun fact, most sessions are organized so you can attend different presentations from different sessions (each session is divided into 4 - 5 equal time slots so people can jump in and out of the sessions to attend the individual presentations they like)

    - Talk to vendors -  There are a lot of new innovative technology being developed every year and vendors are always excited to showcase their work. I have learned a lot by just jumping from stand to stand to talk and learn what is going in terms of structural inspection, analysis, and design of different materials using numerous software and equipment. It really helps compliment the presentations and bring everything together.

    - Make friends! - This is one of the most important ones. This event has been developed to socialize and grow your network, and the event layout shows it! There are many opportunities to talk to new people and learn what they are working on!

I am excited to hear your tips if you have attended or questions if this is your first time! Don't hesitate to reach out and see you all in Orlando!

Hard to believe it has already been almost a year since we saw each other in Orlando. Maybe we didn't see each other and you are attending the Structures Congress for the first time. That is OK! We can all learn from each other. I want to re-surface this thread to hear your best tips and tricks to navigate the Structures Congress. If you are a first-time attendee, leave me questions and I will try to answer it as best I can.

I hope to see some familiar faces, and some new faces at this year's Structures Congress.

Hi Luis, I am also excited for Structures Congress 2020!

For those attending for the first time, SEI has also posted the following article with tips: https://www.asce.org/structural-engineering/news/20191114-structures-congress-first-time-attendee/

I attended for the first time last year, so I am also happy to answer questions anyone may have. Hope to see you in April!

Hi Danielle. I am going to be a first time attendee at this years conference. I am very excited to attend and meet new people in the structural engineering community. I am from Canada so am not a member of ASCE. Do you know if I am still able to attend the Young Professional Events?

Oh yes - come to the orientation! There will be parts of it that are for the scholarship recipients, but it will also have information for first-time attendees and be a great place to meet students and young professionals.

We look forward to seeing you there Noah!

Hi Noah! Yes, feel free to attend the Young Professionals Orientation on Sunday ( I will be there as well and am not a Scholarship Recipient this year).

Another great event for YP that you also should attend is on Monday from 7:00 am – 8:00 am. It is the Meet the Leaders for Students & Young Professionals (35 and under) Breakfast: https://www.structurescongress.org/program/networking-events#monday At this breakfast you will get the opportunity to meet with lots of different SEI leaders and asks them questions about their experiences. Hands down, this was my favorite event last year! If you have any follow up questions, feel free to post them hear or send them my way!

I am very excited to attend my second Structures Congress this year. To those that are attending for the first time, I can promise that you will enjoy your time as a member of the structural engineering community and this could climb the highest rank among the things that you will experience as a member. Just don't be shy and go talk to people. There is always something for everyone and every topic. Also, definitely visit the SEI booth at the conference.
