    The John A. Reif, Jr, Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) in Newark, New Jersey is seeking to fill a Director of Laboratories position.  The director of labs promotes the laboratories in the department through the initiation of research proposals and their subsequent execution. Instructs faculty, staff and students in operation of laboratory equipment. Monitors safety in the laboratories. Develops and conducts training sessions, including civil engineering software applications. 

    Essential Functions:       

    1. Develops research proposals to utilize the Civil and Environmental Engineering laboratories and equipment.
    2. Develops proposals to acquire equipment grants from industry and federal state agencies.
    3. Conducts and supervises research utilizing the Civil and Environmental Engineering laboratories and equipment.
    4. Installs and calibrates new laboratory equipment.
    5. Assists faculty with the design, set-up and execution of laboratory experiments.
    6. Instructs and assists faculty, staff and students in the proper use of laboratory equipment.
    7. Develops procedures and instructions for proper use of laboratory equipment.
    8. Maintains laboratory equipment, including contacting vendors when repairs are necessary.
    9. Recommends to Department Chair new equipment and upgrades of present equipment.
    10. Monitors safety procedures in the laboratories, including safety procedures for experiments in process, may be requested to sit on NJIT Safety Committee.
    11. Develops student training sessions for civil engineering software applications
    12. Perform other duties as required.

     

    Prerequisite Qualifications:

    Bachelor's Degree in Engineering and extensive experience in experimental design and execution required. Must possess ability to understand experimental requirements and must be able to make recommendations on goal attainment. Computer literacy in major engineering software with thorough understanding of data acquisition and the experimental interface required.

    At the university's discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be excepted where the candidate can demonstrate to the satisfaction of the university an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position. 

    Preferred Qualifications: Understanding of basic Environmental, Hydraulic, Geotechnical, Structural and Transportation Engineering concepts desirable. Basic electronic and mechanical trouble-shooting skills desirable. Machining (e.g., CNC, Lathe, Drill Press) skills desirable.  Ability to work flexible hours as per the departmental needs.
