You may consider some alternatives:
- Drink decaffeinated coffee. I do this. I think it tastes similar to regular coffee. A hot beverage in the middle of the morning and another one after lunch.
- Drink hot chocolate, but take it easy with the sugar.
Whatever you do, stay away from energy drinks. Those are like ten cups of coffee at once.
And, If you are buzzing, it is called hypertension, and that's bad news for you.
Recently, a friend showed me that if you prepare your coffee following a traditional procedure for small servings (preheating your cup, heating but not boiling the water, and pouring the water over the grains slowly), you may enjoy not only a better taste but an intense aroma and other characteristic form coffee. Also, it lets you slow down for a few minutes during a busy morning or afternoon at work.

I've heard of other engineers drinking tea as an alternative to coffee. My question always was: doesn't tea have caffeine as well?
My guess is the caffeine intake is smaller so you can regulate your consumption and don't end up buzzing.
Regarding drinking a lot of water, I don't do it as a health measure but rather as an alternative to snacking at my desk.

Four cups of coffee in the morning, then several cups of green tea in the afternoon. I used a beautiful clear mug from Asilomar Park, CA, until folks remarked that my green tea looked like urine (and it did). The switch to tea in the afternoon came after 12 cups of coffee had me vibrating like a tuning fork.
BTW: drinking copious amounts of water as a health measure is overrated, IMO.

Every engineering office has a respectable coffee room or machine as well as a water dispenser.
A typical engineer coffee schedule: Start the day with a coffee from commuting and then replenish with an "in-house" coffee in the am. After noon, go on a coffee run to end the day.
That's 3 cups of coffee on a casual day.
If an engineer does not have a coffee cup on their desk the spot is occupied by a water tumbler of some sort (boasting some other company's logo).
What tumbler or coffee cup do you use and how often do you refill?
Admittedly I do not drink coffee but drink 3-4 refills from my 24 oz cupco blue polka dot tumbler.
