    Massihullah:

Your resume is on the upper boundary of the scale (9+).

Question -- Was (or will) your thesis be published?  Listing a citation is a huge plus!!

Additional improvements, would be to check the "font" size Certificates an Education do not parallel the matching header size.

Think about the "cover" letter (and collect your professional references).  Practice the interview!!

    Alexander:

Congratulations on your success to date (and all the best going forward)!!

First, I actually enjoy reading your "blogs."

Second, I have been tracking your career development via ASCE (I actually reviewed your earlier resume.)

Third, excellent choice of "action words" on the resume -- Analyzed, Co-Assembled, Co-Produced, Compared, Developed, Discovered, Influenced, Located and Updated.  Try to utilize Innovate, Integrated, Sustainable, Unique.  Expand upon the "specialized" tools you utilized.

    Here are my thoughts --->>

    (1)  Make a transition via weeding out your accomplishments beyond five years.  For Example, page two of your resume should be avoided if not completely filled with achievements.

    (2)  Pursue a publication.

    (3)  Think about your P.E. (time runs quickly).

    (4)  Consider a PMP from the management perspective.

    Keep in touch via ASCE.

    Respectively,

    David

    Hello David,

Thank you very much for finding my "blogs" here on ASCE. Although I needed to stop and focus on my first full-time job here in Indiana, I hope to continue helping ASCE directly down the road.

I have been thinking about how soon to take the PE Exam, but I did not consider the PMP yet. I will keep this five-year span in mind, just like the expectations of a two-page resume.

I've attached my resume for review. I've been working for a little more than 4 years now so I figured it's time I updated my resume. Previously my resume was a little cramped (I probably felt the need to over compensate because I was starting out,) so I made a few changes.

Please advise on the following edits that I made:

    • I removed my internship experiences as I felt that my actual job experience was more valuable.
    • I removed the descriptions from my extracurricular activities because they were taking up unnecessary space, in my opinion.
    • I also removed my GPA from my schooling because I thought it was taking up space and unnecessary once I had work experience. Not because they were low per se. (Undergrad: 3.426 | Grad: 3.0)
    • Should I remove the "Dean's List" from the Honors/Awards Section?

    All other feedback is appreciated!

Thank you Tirza for taking care of this, and to whoever is reviewing my resume!

    Daniel:

    Great Questions -->

My thoughts are that a resume should emphasize the previous five years of accomplishment.  If seeking Government Opportunity, then the previous ten unless there is significant value on an earlier success story.  It is difficult to make this transition.

One Major Item is missing!!  What are you seeking?  For Example, Objective.

I like the logo (innovative / unique).

    Daniel,

To add to David's comments, I agreed with your listed edits and I would recommend moving your work experience higher up to be directly under education.  Your Honor/Awards and Technical Skills are secondary items to hiring managers and they want to see your experience, especially since you have been working for almost five years now.  If you could re-format, I would try to expand on your experiences and shrink your Extracurricular activities - your "experiences" are your selling points and your extracurricular activities help to embellish your commitment.  I hope this helps.  Good luck.

Please EXPAND upon "field engineer" experience.  For Example, scope of activities and degree of outreach.  What tools did you utilize throughout the project lifecycle?  What was your role (and contribution) at job meetings?  For Example, list action items you helped to resolve.

Bilal - I think your resume is too cluttered - most recruiters, especially hiring engineers, do not have time to read a resume like yours with the vast amount of information provided.  You need to re-organize, highlighting your experience first (re-write your most recent experience, it is too generic - more specificity).  Questions - when are you graduating?  The 2019-2024 doesn't make as big as an impact as a "May 20024 Graduation or Expected Graduation" would make.   Cluster your Engineering experience together and then your other experiences and extracurricular activities together.  I have never been a fan of coursework on a resume - most use it as a filler - you don't need it with everything else you have there.  I hope this helps you.  Best of luck.

    Bilal:

Going further with Michael's comment, coursework can be replaced with skills and how you are applying them (perhaps within the community?) (perhaps within ASCE?) (perhaps on school committees?).  I thought the varied font was excellent and enabled the receiver to navigate; however, I agree that a little less clutter can go far with stretched hiring managers.

    Greetings,

I am an undergraduate Student at Virginia Tech studying Civil and Environmental Engineering. I have been blessed with an ongoing internship, however, I want to expand my horizons and look for a more stimulating environment. I am currently a water resources intern but I hope to intern as a Sustainability Consultant for an Architectural/Engineering firm someday. I have drafted my resume with that in mind. Please feel free to look at it and comment. Your feedback would be highly appreciated.

Anum - overall, very impressive resume with great experience; however, for your most recent experience in 2023, I feel that the descriptions are very vague and generic - unlike your other experiences where you describe exactly the scope of your work in those internships.  I would re-write those first bullets to be more descriptive.  Good luck.

Please enumerate upon Building Codes (National, Local).  What codes?  Do you work virtually?  Do you travel?

Please expand upon "complex" claims -- What made them complex?  What was your contribution?  Did you negotiate with multiple stakeholders?

Please add greater detail on your accomplishments with regards to magnitude and quantity.  Did you have a leadership role?

Please expand upon your involvement with ASCE.

    Hi Smit,

Thank you for sharing your resume, I have attached my comments in the attached PDF.

Overall you have a decent bank of experience to work with but it gets lost in the formatting and wording of your resume, so do take the time to condense down your resume so it's less wordy and use stronger action verbs and be more specific when talking about your responsibilities.

I made suggestions of sections/areas where you can omit to make your resume stand out. The goal isn't to pour everything onto your resume, the goal is to make it catchy enough for anyone glancing at your resume for a few seconds.

    Sean:

I encourage you to resubmit for additional peer review (and here are my thoughts) -->>

    (1)  Utilize a "standard" font.

    (2)  Write OBJECTIVE in lieu of ABOUT ME.

    (3)  Emphasize EIT, Civil / Architect dual track, Construction Management, Public Works going back five years (only).  For Example, reprioritize the accomplishments with hard hitting headers such as Certifications, Community Outreach, Education, Professional Skills and Societies.  Leverage volunteer work activities by talking about leadership.  Strengthen your OBJECTIVE (everyone has a willingness to succeed; however, you might want to continue along the lines of Construction Management and / or Public Works by expressing your desire to work under a professional engineer with a longer range goal).

    (4) Memberships should list professional before hobbies.

    (5) Omit coursework as it does nothing for you.  However, internships are key.

If interested about Government Opportunities, then check out USAJOBS.

    All the best,

    David

    Hi Sean,

Thanks for sharing your resume for review, I have attached my comments in the attached PDF.

I strongly suggest reformatting your resume so it's easier to read and looks more organized. Add section dividers and bullet points. Use the same font style and size throughout your resume. You have a lot of good experience/skills as a second year student but that may get overlooked just based on the formatting of your resume.

Also, if you have any engineering projects that you're working on at school (whether in an engineering club or class project), I would add that in and swap out your "ACE Academy" experience since it would be more relevant and more current.

Andres - I like the format of your resume - it reads well; however, your statement at the top is more of a description of you than an objective statement.  After your PhD in Structural Engineering, what are you looking to do - work in academia? Public sector? Private sector? I think that needs to be reflected in your Objective statement because a PhD in Structural Engineering is quite an accomplishment but employers reviewing your resume will need to know what you are looking for.  Good luck with your PhD (when will you be complete - please add that also) and I hope this helped.

    Observations --->>

Unfortunately, I find your resume is too vague without enough detail and selling points.  For example, Seismic Design (Drift? Emergency Response? Fault? Geotech? Non-structural? Occupancy? Structural? Weak Story? Other?).  What type of calculations did you engage?  What level cost estimates did you address?

Additionally, I imagine you wrote several research papers.  Were these published?

There is no OBJECTIVE statement.  What are you seeking?

    ORGANIZATIONS should have dates (timeframes).

Are you seeking a P.E.?  Other?

Please revise and resubmit if you are available.  Our peers will review the update.

    Hi Andrés,

This is overall a good resume!

A few suggestions on ways you can further improve your resume:

    • I see you have your Engineering in Training (EIT) Certification – that is wonderful news! I would add a certification heading and add your EIT number as well as what local board your EIT is through (i.e. mine was through the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania)
    • I don't know as much about the PhD side of things, but if you have an anticipated graduation date, I would add this somewhere on your resume.
    • More a preference than a hard rule, but I would change your summary statement at the top to be in third person rather than first person (aka no "I" throughout) ! Example: Objective: Junior civil engineering major seeking a co-op position in highway-related field beginning in March 2024 through September 2024. Mike and David seem to have also given you some great feedback on this portion already.
    • For your professional experience, I would love to see more on the quantitative side. For example, for " Verified design of foundations, non-structural walls, and façades", how many different designs did you review during this time – 2 or 200? Are these foundations for high rise buildings or a one level commercial buildings?
    • For organizations, I would love to see how long you have been a part of these organizations like "American Society of Civil Engineers - Member (2013 – Present).

Good job, and I hope this helps!

    Hi Scott,

This is overall a great resume! With several years of professional experience, I would agree that a multipage resume is valid.

A few suggestions on ways you can further improve your resume:

    • For the skills section, you could add what version of the program (i.e. AutoCAD 2020 or Bentley OpenRoads Designer 10.12)
    • For the second professional reference provided, I would capitalize the M in Mark's email to match the one above and delete the extra space between the @ symbol and portlandoregan.gov
    • For professional licenses, you could add when they expire (i.e. my PE License in PA expires on 09/30/2025)

I have been working on Vision Zero initiatives in Philadelphia, so it is always nice to read about folks doing the same in different locations!

Good job, and I hope this helps.

    Andrew Kline

    Objective line:

I think its good you have a line at the top of your resume explaining who you are: I would recommend editing it slightly for each specific position that you apply to. Also, feel free to remove some of the qualifying words such as "hard working student". I'm a fan of using your resume to show what you are, rather than saying it. Less is more in certain parts of a resume, and personally I find that a simple objective statement such as "Graduating Civil/Environmental engineering student seeking to begin career as a [job title] at [company name] is a good place to start. Then let the next parts of your resume show why you're a good fit for that job. Use a cover letter to help tell your story more about why you are hard working. Its in the cover letter that you can point to different things in your resume directly to endorse yourself.

    Education section:

This looks good – I would nitpick and move MS above BS.

    Skills section:

This looks good too. Could consider removing Google Drive and Microsoft Office unless you want to pick specific things such as "excel VBA/macro programming". Its generally assumed everyone knows office in this profession.

    Engineering Experience:

I like this section too. I think its clear, and you use the space well. I would be a little confused about the difference between this section and the Engineering Internship Experience if I were a recruiter or someone only skimming. You could consider merging the two sections unless you feel strongly that it weakens your "story" about yourself. Or consider calling this section "Engineering Experience (Academic)" if both bullets are schoolwork.

    Engineering Internship Experience:

This section looks as good as the one above it. Considering using bold font for the company name, or underline it or italicize it. Make it easy for someone to distinguish the job title and the company for each place you worked.

    Leadership and Activities:

    This section also looks good.

    Final thoughts:

You have a strong resume and the organization is great. It is clean and pretty easy to read already. I would encourage you to move the sections around to the following order:

    1.       Objective Line

    2.       Engineering Internship Experience

    3.       Engineering Experience

    4.       Skills section

    5.       Education section

    6.       Leadership and Activities

Great job and good luck in your search.

    Hi Nalah,

Your resume is very neat and easy to read. Consider my lack of major changes a testament to the good shape that your resume is already in.

Personally, I find that adding a simple objective statement such as "EIT seeking to continue career as a [job title] at [company name] is a good place to start. Then let the next parts of your resume show why you're a good fit for that job. Most companies will also request a cover letter. Its in the cover letter that you can point to different things in your resume directly to "tell your story" and endorse yourself.

I would encourage you to move your Education section below the next 2 sections. Work Experience and Skills are personally what I see as the top things you want someone to read about yourself. I'm less picky about where you want to place Education after those 2 sections.

These are personal and somewhat nitpicky changes. Your resume is already in good shape.

I see you asked specifically about how to describe your activities now that you are self-employed too. I agree that you likely have more potential to endorse yourself here, and it seems like you have enough blank space in your resume remaining that it would be possible to add a few additional lines without sacrificing the aesthetic. I have never been self-employed so I apologize for having little to offer here. The first thing is that you could change "self-employed" simply to "owner", or "owner/operator" which may sound more appealing.  I am trying to think of other things I'd want to know. Do you manage any staff? Sub-contract any work? Does your work require report-writing or have you gotten good at writing contracts/scopes of work or chasing bids.  Maybe estimate how much business you do in a year in dollars? There are likely some aspects of your job that you have normalized, but are actually good project management, business development, or communication skills that not everyone has.

    Hi Palak,

    Some comments on your resume:

Start by providing only one phone number so as not to confuse potential recruiters with too much information. Keeping it simple is best.

    1.       I would move Education to the very bottom of your resume. In this section, if you are applying to jobs in the USA, it may be helpful to use a few words to explain what "Rank 2" is, since it sounds like something you are proud of.

    2.       Also, if you run out of space, consider removing the line about "winner in badminton" first since its not highly work-related. The technical paper you have listed below seems to be the most important thing in that section, consider moving it up.

HINDUSTAN UNILEVER - TERRITORY SALES OFFICER TRAINEE

    3.       I am not sure what RS stands for, it may be helpful to type out the full term once, and then abbreviate it after that. Same with SD2, unless these are industry-standard terms that I am just not familiar with.

    4.       Under bullet 3 here - It may be helpful here to say something different than "gain profound insights". You did a better job with the next line, by saying that you were able to correlate one item to another group of items.

    Courses Section

This line could be removed if you want to save space. I see you mention python again under Skills so it will not go unnoticed.

    Skills section

If you want to try to take this resume down to 1 page, another line you could consider removing is the Soft Skills line. These are skills and words that are better used and shown through your cover letter as you describe the things you did on your resume in more detail in a story-format.

In conclusion you have clearly picked up a decent amount of experience in a few different roles. Your resume is well formatted and pretty well written. A few changes will make it even better, especially for applications to jobs in the USA.

    Hi Gergino,

Please find my comments below. I don't have very many comments apart from some minor suggestions. Your resume format is very clean and neat.

If you are looking for industry work, I would consider moving your Professional Experience to the top. This could be followed by Research Experience, and then Education.

Include just one email address on your resume.

You don't need to include when your resume was last updated.

I think you can remove the list of supervisors from your Education section under your second masters.

You can remove the 0s before the numbers you are listing such as the number of papers that you are a co-author on.

If you would like to save space, you can also remove your name and signature from the bottom of your resume.

In the future, if you need to save space, I would consider removing the Professional Affiliations section. You can keep it for now but I don't think it is worth going to a 3rd page for it unless you are in a leadership position.

    Posted 11-20-2023 10:42 AM

    Hello, Sebastian

Here are my suggested changes to your resume:

-I would remove the whole paragraph you have that starts with "Flexible, resilient, and multi-faceted..." because anything tangible in that section should be covered below in your work experience. The intangible qualities like flexibility should be demonstrated in an interview setting with your answers to questions. When I am given a resume where someone tells me about themselves in that way, it doesn't convince me that those qualities are true. If you're not careful, because it is written text, it may come across with a bragging tone that you don't intend.

-instead of that first paragraph, I would suggest a simple line that says what you are seeking. These kinds of statements help the person receiving the resume know who should review it, if they offer what you are seeking, etc. If you are preparing your resume for a specific position at a specific company, you can make sure you call it the same thing the company does. Here are a couple example statements: "Seeking full-time employment as a structural engineering project manager" or "Seeking a civil engineering summer internship with a focus in geotechnical engineering"

-I would suggest finding a place within your work experience to place your number of square meters from the into paragraph so that info is still included.

-Depending on where you seek employment, make sure your numbers are written in the style of that place. For example, were some countries write "$5.428.000" and "3.470" other countries write "$5,428,000" and "3,470"-- to those who aren't familiar with that difference, it could look like a typo.

-Consider changing the skills section to a "codes and programs" section and list the codes you are familiar with along with the analysis software. The rest of the skills, such as structural analysis, you've covered in other places already.

-I would remove the "core competencies" section. As mentioned previously, these skills are better demonstrated than listed out since anyone can claim to have the qualities.

-With the changes listed above, I think you may be able to get the document down to just 2 pages. This would allow someone to print your resume on a single sheet of paper.

    Overall comments:

-I like the format you've chosen. It is easy to read and well organized into sections.

-It seems like you have some great experience so far. Buena suerte en sus estudias y su carrera

    Hello

Below are my comments on your resume:

-Change the "professional summary" to an "objective statement." Intangible skills like being analytical and motivated are better demonstrated than told. I would make the objective statement something like "Seeking a graduate role in transportation engineering"

-The vertical bar on the resume cuts off the end of your email a little. Shift the line or slightly decrease the font size on your contact information

-consider writing out your LinkedIn url (or generate a shorter one) in case someone is reviewing a paper copy of your resume (this may not be necessary if you are easily found by typing your name on LinkedIn)

-In your description at the end of the last page, I would choose a different word than "shunning" since that has a specific connotation to many native English speakers. Maybe "discouraging" would be a good replacement word.

-overall the resume does a good job of summarizing your experience and education. Best of luck in your career!

    Alexander:

Your resume is very robust.  Navigation is great and emphasis seems appropriate.  Please be sure to align your resume with the respective application.  For example, one size does not fit all.  That said, there might be a need to modify your highlighted features.

    All the best,

    David

    Arafat:

Clearly, you have acquired a vast level of knowledge.  Remember to fine tune your resume (one size does not fit all) with the posting.

Please highlight your name in larger font insofar as connecting with the Hiring Officer.

    All the best,

    David

Below are my comments on your resume:

-Is your PhD program a combined Masters and PhD? A reviewer might think something is missing

-under the "experience" section, I think you could format it in a way that reduces unnecessary white spaces. I would not bold the numbered sections.

-try to get your resume down to just 2 pages. I think you can get where with some formatting adjustments.

    Edmund,

Since you have been in the workforce for over 11 years, I agree with your format of experience first, education towards the bottom as most employers will care more about your work history vs. your education because you are considered "established" in the engineering field.  I think your objective is too vague - it needs to be more precise OR you may need to re-word your objective depending on the type of job your are applying to.  Your objective needs work to be more specific but I don't think you should limit yourself to one write-up and you may need to tailor it to whatever advertisements you respond to - just be more direct and less vague.

Good luck to you in the future - Mike

    Mohammed,

First question I am left with after reviewing your resume is "When do you graduate?" - put a forecasted graduation date.  In your Objective, I think the first two (2) sentences are unnecessary because the rest of your resume does an excellent job in describing you.  Expand your objective with more specifics, you state you are looking for a position upon graduation - once again, when is that?  In the interim, are you looking for an internship, FT job, etc. - use the Objective to help guide the hiring manager reviewing your resume.  Under the experience for JerseyStem - what kind of company was this - it appears to be an internship but an additional bullet could assist.  At the bottom of the resume, I would reformat to leave a space between Societies, Publications and Scholarships - it all blends together and I think you being published is a very attractive item to employers on your resume for your field.

Best of luck to you in the future - Mike
