A New Perspective -- Civil Engineering vacation activity

On a recent trip, I went on a tour where we were able to walk under a bridge. Typically, bridge catwalks are reserved for inspections and maintenance, but in this case there is a agreement with the DOT that allows these tours.

It was cool to see this new perspective of a bridge, and I have a newfound respect for the bridge inspectors. (The bridge was being inspected the day we were there.) Throughout the tour we heard information about the bridge materials and construction.

Have you ever participated in any activity that gave you a new outlook on something in industry? Are there any industry-related activities that you'd recommend including in a trip?

    Information:
The New River Gorge Bridge is 876 feet tall. The catwalk is equipped with a continuous safety line, so harnesses only have to be hooked in one time for the whole walk under the three thousand foot long bridge.
