How to Start Your Own Civil Contractor Business

Have you been laid off, or a new high school graduate, trying to find your niche? Whatever the reason you may be looking for a way to earn a living on your own, self-employment is a very desirable end goal.

The construction industry is one that is largely unaffected by very many factors because there is always going to be someone who needs a civil contractor. By going it on your own, you control how much you work, when you work and the more work you do, the more you earn.

Power tools are non-negotiable

First things first, you will need to purchase good quality equipment to ensure that it lasts, is reliable and that you always have the right tools for the job. Look at the reviews of the different power tools you need to help you make the best choices.

Every contract needs to have a quality grinder tool. A reliable and durable angle grinder will save you hours of back-breaking hard labor. Check out toolinspector.com for advice on the best tools for the job.

You will want to ensure your grinder tool is not too heavy, or you could become fatigued and injure yourself because the grinder was heavier than you could handle. Check the positioning of the handles and the overall weight, as well as the reviews by other satisfied customers.

Nitty-gritty stuff

One of the most important things you will need to do is ensure that you have a strong but comfortable tool belt. When you are halfway up a ladder or teetering on the scaffolding, you won’t want your tool belt to give way and have all your tools go crashing to the ground.

Choose a tool belt out of strong fabric with minimal stretch so that it doesn’t slip down as you climb up! It may seem like a no-brainer, but it needs to be strong enough to hold all the tools you need once you are at the top.

The bolts and nuts

Choose these wisely, as they are ultimately what will hold your handiwork together. Don’t economize on these basic needs because if you choose cheap bolts and they are weak, your entire project could crash to the ground. You will incur huge additional costs and possibly cost your reputation.

When all is said and done, your workmanship is only as good as the smallest piece of equipment you use, so choose quality.

Your suppliers need to play along

When ordering building materials, remember that your deadline is literally in the hands of your supplier. If you have ordered a few tonnes of builders’ sand and your supplier delivered three days later than agreed, it will put undue pressure on you to complete the project by the agreed-upon date.

With your reputation as a contractor is at stake, it is vital to check out supplier reviews online so you don’t find yourself caught between a rock and a hard place.

Partnering with like-minded business owners

One of the greatest assets you will find is a good relationship with other reputable and dependable contractors. If you find a great plumber or electrical contractor, build up a relationship with them, so you can refer one another.

This sort of “partnership” is one of the best ways to grow your business while helping them to grow theirs. Their referrals will be invaluable to you, especially when your business is still new, and you haven’t earned that all-important “good reputation” yet. This is a classic scenario of “You scratch my back…”, and these relationships are beneficial to all parties.
