Generally, the better you take care of something, the longer it lasts.

With this in mind, it makes sense to take care of your water fountain regularly so that it can maintain its normal working function for as long as possible.

How do you take care of a water fountain? You should know that most of the maintenance work relating to water fountains is done on their pumps.

Water fountain pumps are submersible and they are responsible for keeping the fountain’s water flowing.

This article contains relevant tips on how you can adequately take care of your water fountain and its pump.

  1. Put the Pump Under Water

Different water fountains require different levels of maintenance based on their individual designs and how large or small they are.

For this reason, you’ll need to make a personal observation of your fountain for the next couple of days following when you just installed it.

This observation helps you determine how much water you’ll be periodically adding to the fountain.

  1. Leave It Turned on All the Time

In addition to the previously discussed outdoor fountain ideas, another relevant contribution to pump maintenance is keeping the water fountain running.

The idea here is that damages caused by frequent powering on and off of the pump are prevented. With the fountain constantly running, its lifespan is prolonged.

In addition to the prolonged pump life, the constant running of the water fountain also helps to keep the water clean.

Logically, a water fountain that stays off most times would have water that isn’t flowing and that could lead to build-up of bacteria. However, a fountain that’s constantly running stays cleaner.

  1. Use Distilled Water

The use of distilled water is another way to care for your water fountain. Using distilled water curbs the growth of algae.

Note that distilled water works better for indoor water fountains than outdoor ones. In case distilled water isn’t available, other products like algae control can be used in the fountain.

When using fountain care products in outdoor fountains, you must ensure that those products aren’t harmful to wildlife.

  1. Clean the Pump

Part of the maintenance process needed to keep your fountain’s pump running is regular cleaning.

The pump needs to be cleaned because it’s easily exposed to debris and dirt. This makes sense because the pump is actually responsible for the filtration of dirt from the water.

When you want to clean out the pump, first remove it from the fountain and then pull off its cover. Go ahead to wipe the body and also the pump’s insides clean. This will ensure your pump will last for years to come so you won’t have to spend money on one over and over again.

  1. Clean the Water Fountain Often

Lastly, consistent cleaning of the water fountain will help extend its lifespan. Besides, dirty fountains lose their beauty and attractiveness, and become an eyesore.

Make sure you spare some time to thoroughly clean your fountain or get a professional to do it.
