Making More Healthy Choices At Work

It doesn’t matter whether you are as fit as can be, or are morbidly obese: the truth is that at work, you might not be able to make the same decisions that you would otherwise. Your workplace might be strategically located next to unhealthy fast-food spots, when you would otherwise make a salad or healthy sandwich at home.

Similarly, you might find that you have to be sedentary in your cubicle for hours at a time, when you would rather be exercising intermittently throughout the day. No matter what your situation is, here are some ways that you can make some healthy choices at work that your body and mind will appreciate later.

Bag Lunch

We have all given in to the office ordering pizza or Chinese when the workload is too intense. While this isn’t a criminal sin, if you are eating this kind of food every day - you might find yourself looking in the mirror, wondering where the extra pounds came from. While it might not be the “cool” thing to do - bringing a bag lunch with all of the right fruits and vegetables to keep your diet on track might be the perfect thing to do.

There might be that co-worker constantly tempting you out to greasy food and/or drinks, but the bag lunch will help you remember that your meal is already prepared, and that you have a plan to stick to. This is also a great idea for those who really want to stick to a specific diet, and don’t want to be derailed from it, as well.

Vape Instead

So, you’re a smoker. There’s almost no way to be unaware that smoking isn’t healthy, so it is clear that you are doing this by choice and understand the consequences of your actions. It is obviously optimal that you quit smoking, but if you have to give in during the workplace - vaping is the alternative that you should be thinking about.

It appears to be significantly healthier than traditional cigarettes, and it can also help in terms of productivity. It can definitely affect your status at the workplace if you are always stepping outside to smoke, and there are sure to be co-workers that might not appreciate the “cigarette” smell. Consider vaping as a way to make a healthier work choice.

The Commute

This certainly will not work for those who live a certain distance from their workplace, but have you considered walking or biking to work? There are many individuals who might be driving to work when it’s only a brisk five or ten-minute walk away. The truth is that the morning walk might be a great way to reflect, listen to a podcast, get in the right mood for work with some music that you appreciate, or even catch up on e-mails.

There is no doubt than driving can be relaxing, but with walking or biking - you would actually be moving. That walk or bike back after work might help give you a second wind, rather than resigning to being lethargic after a long day’s work. Even if it might not be an option for everyone, the commute can help contribute to your health in the long run, even if it’s walking more than usual.

Breaks

While you might not have the luxury of taking an activity break every hour - there is no doubt that your workplace will give you time to go to the bathroom, or take a personal call. What if you made your break an “activity” break - where you actually took a quick walk? For those who want to do something a little more intense, consider a jog around the block.

It might sound a little ridiculous, but some quick push-ups or sit-ups to get your blood going might be a great idea for those who want to be healthier at work, as well. Even if it might not be able to happen every day; it’s something to keep in mind.
