I am an adjunct professor at Case Western Reserve University and have been asked to teach ''Water Resources Engineering"  in the Fall.  The class has been in the catalog, but has not recently been taught.  The class description is:
Water doctrine, probabilistic analysis of hydrologic data, common and rare event analysis, flood forecasting and control, reservoir design, hydrologic routing, synthetic streamflow generation, hydroelectric power, water resource quality, water resources planning.
Because it has been 30+ years since I took a similar class, and Fall is just around the corner, if anyone could share resources such as current textbooks and syllabus I would greatly appreciate it.

    Hi Gina,
I haven't taught this specific class yet, but I've seen colleagues using May's Water Resources Engineering text (https://www.amazon.com/Water-Resources-Engineering-Larry-Mays/dp/0470460644) and McCuen's Hydrologic Analysis and Design text (https://www.amazon.com/Hydrologic-Analysis-Design-Richard-McCuen/dp/0134313127). I also highly recommend that you check out hydrolearn.org (https://www.hydrolearn.org/) which has lots of resources, including full exercises, on hydrology and water resources engineering topics.

    regards,
    Lauren

    Yes, Larry Mays!  Good suggestion!
(sorry my ASCE signature seems to be messed up, can't get it to display what I want ...)

    Am Agomuo Akachukwu from Nigeria.
Sources to teach water Engineering are simple and we do experience them. always. HYDRAULIC STRUCTURE
    1. FLUME
    2. WEIRS
    3. ENERGY DISSIPATOR
    4. SLUICE GATES.
    5. Under pipeflow, open channel flow, uniform flow, critical flow and channel Designs. Common examples are
    • In pipe and open channel flow, if there's hydraulic  jump what happens.
    • If the slope is anti clock wise, what happens?
    • If an overhead tank is not above the building is to supply water, water can't run effectively.
Combination of pipes and the pressure required for the water to rush effectively
You can take them to fish ponds, swimming pools, irrigation farms, reservoir tank for a community. How does water goes in to the fish pond and swimming pool, how do water go out. How can water be distributed in a community from a reservoir. Thanks

For a text you might try, "Hydraulic Engineering," by Roberson, Cassidy and Chaudhry.

    Gina,

Concur with Lauren about HydroLearn - well-documented learn objectives and activities on a variety of topics.

You might also check out Anne Jefferson's recent post about her Kent State Watershed Hydrology class. Bonus might be that some material might be "local" for you and your students.  http://all-geo.org/highlyallochthonous/2020/05/how-i-taught-flooding-when-watershed-hydrology-went-online/

    Good luck!

    cheers,
    Clint

    Hi Gina,

The texts suggested so far are good--I've used all of them.  For what it's worth, I now use Hydrology and Floodplain Analysis by Bedient, Huber, and Vieux in the water resources sequence at my university. I find that the mix of hydrology and hydraulics in that text allows me to use it in an introductory hydrology course as well as in an elective course that includes some hydrologic modeling applications. You might also want to take a look at Physical Hydrology by Dingman. I find that Dingman provides a better coverage of the science than do most of the engineering textbooks.

Also, you might be interested in the Water Resources Educators Forum here at EWRI. https://collaborate.asce.org/communities/community-home?CommunityKey=9546890c-b4d6-4508-8d49-e67f262af410.  This is an activity of the education and student councils here at EWRI.  There are a few resources focused online teaching in the forum.
