Chasing "Perfluoro-alkyl substances are alkanes where hydrogen is substituted with fluorine, and that have one or more functional groups attached to one end of the alkyl chain.  Until recently, the compounds that elicited the most concern Perfluoro acids, such as Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA)  (the r-group contains a carboxyl radical)" remediation. My guess is that it concentrated in catch basins. Any answers cheerfully accepted !

    Dear Len Andersen
    Hi
It's an interesting topic, I can only ask you to provide a little more information to the members of the ASCE for discussion in this area.

This is very interesting, Hydrologist and other consultant engineering may found this challenging to provide engineering solutions and options to eliminate those compounds. And so I make a little research about that and this is what I found.

This stability makes these compounds practically nonbiodegradable and persistent in the environment (Key et al., 1997, 1998). Both PFOS and PFOA are fluorosurfactants that can drastically lower the surface tension of water. These chemicals are produced for numerous applications in industrial processes and are used to make consumer products, such as water-, oil-, and stain-resistant coatings for clothing fabrics, leather, and carpets, and oil-resistant coatings for paper products for food contact. And also known that PFOA has been linked to a number of health problems in humans, including diagnosed high cholesterol, ulcerative colitis, thyroid disease, testicular cancer, kidney cancer, and pregnancy-induced hypertension, and animal studies indicated adverse developmental effects. The assumption given it came from catch basin. With that how engineers can solved these concerning compounds.

Then, I found an article related to this entitled "Perfluorooctanoic Acid (PFOA) and Perfluorooctane Sulfonate (PFOS) in Surface Water From the Langat River, Peninsular Malaysia"

    Abstract

Perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) are not degradable and persistent compounds, bioacculumative and possess toxic characteristics. The compounds have been produced in large quantities and then applied and disposed without proper monitoring and regulation within the past half-century. Although the PFCs productions were to end today, the compounds would continue to persist in the environment for many years to come. Currently in Malaysia no studies have addressed perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and no regulations has been developed to control these compounds. The analytical method used in this study involves solid phase extraction together with liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS). S# is referring to sampling station. Results from the water samples from Langat River, Malaysia, indicated that relatively high concentration of PFOS can be found in the eastern of the river, one of the most populated areas within the basin (S16–S35) with the highest concentration in station S35 (43.5 ng/mL). Reason for this concentration is that the compound was highly used in industry as well as in manufacturing processes and consumer products. Relatively high concentration of PFOA can be found in station S6 (5.94 ng/mL) because this station is the station receiving effluent from landfill site. Further studies on the PFCs compounds could provide more data set and larger view of current state of PFCs contamination in Malaysian aquatic environments.
