  • 1.  Risk Informed Decision Making - Are You Using It?

    I came across Risk Informed Decision Making  while doing an informal survey of risk management practices in civil engineering.  With a background in the oil and gas industry, I assumed this type of approach was fairly common place, but apparently it is not. I have subsequently found reference to its application in dam safety, the nuclear industry, and NASA and I'm curious where else it is being used.

    I also came across ASCE Policy 569 - Risk Informed Design and wonder based on the content, if this is about Risk Informed Decision Making. I  hope that somebody responsible for the policy's authorship might be able to shed more light on the policy and its intent.

    Risk-informed decision-making is a highly deliberative process. It shares many similarities with the Hazard and Operability (HAZOP) process, which is used routinely to manage risk in industries where significant hazards are present, such as oil and gas.

    A search on HAZOP will pull up good references, including a Wikipedia article.
