ASCE has published it's Best Places for Civil Engineers. How do you view that list? Would you consider moving to one of the 10 listed locations?

    Thanks Bill!

The very best place to work is where you will receive the support to

    learn and grow.

And given your life-journey, that may well change from time to time.

    Cheers,

    Bill

There are a lot of factors that would keep me from wanting to live in many of the listed cities. One of the things I found attractive about civil engineering as a student was that everywhere in the world has opportunities for civil engineers. I like living in a smaller city where I'm within 30 minutes of more rural settings. When I lived in downtown, I could load up my kayak and be on the water at a secluded lake within an hour. I was also able to purchase a home (with a mortgage) just a couple years after graduation using the money I saved from my civil engineering job for my down payment.

There are some wonderful places for civil engineers to live that may not have as many civil jobs available on paper, but relative to population size, there is a lot of opportunity. I know in my area we are experiencing a shortage of civil engineers to fill the roles available, and I hope that students or engineers looking to move don't think this list reflects the reality of the breadth of great places to live with openings for civil engineers.

Great insights, Heidi. Seems as if the CE work ought to be indexed to the number of engineers available.

I lived and worked in one of the top 10 and the choice was either affordable housing and a hideous commute or outrageous housing costs and a reasonable commute. My choice since then has been smaller towns.
