I used to attend ASCE specialty conferences and found them extremely useful -- learning new techniques and making contacts. Some annual events were pretty repetitive, with the same people presenting much the same information from one year to the next. The annual ASCE Congress didn't empress me. It was mostly the bricks and mortar folks and I found little to interest a water-oriented person like me.
Local chapter meetings -- both professional and student -- proved to be fruitful in many ways, but now they are at least an hour's drive away.
Virtual meetings have allowed me to continue technical committee involvement. That's the best of all.
