  • 1.  Sustainable Infrastructure a Priority at the United Nations for 2021

The President of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Ambassador Munir Akram from Pakistan  stated his goals for his term as ECOSOC President at the SDG Moment in September ; see https://www.un.org/ecosoc/sites/www.un.org.ecosoc/files/files/en/president/2021/statement-ecosoc-president-18-september-2020.pdf

    His second goal is

infrastructure. Sustainable infrastructure is key to promoting all 17 SDG goals. It impacts on 92% of these goals. We need to focus on investment in sustainable infrastructure, renewable energy, transportation, housing, water, sanitation, unless we are able to invest about $1.5. trillion additionally, every year in the developing countries. We will fall back further from achieving the SDGs.

I have proposed the establishment of an infrastructure investment facility as a public private partnership to accelerate sustainable infrastructure development in the developing countries.

aligns nicely with the work of the ASCE Committee on Sustainability and the ASCE Five-Year Roadmap to Sustainable Development.

2021 should offer  excellent  opportunities for the engineering profession to step up and advocate for sustainable and resilient infrastructure.

Re: "As stewards of the nation's infrastructure, civil engineers are called to lead and advocate for sustainable design, programs, and development."

Perhaps you might share what the specific plan is to address what appears to be overlooked for many projects that end when construction is complete and accepted.

    Q. What are the plans to address and include a "Operational Risk Management Plan" to guide those trades and professions that are to maintain the facility as a f(t)?

Thank you for considering this request.

    Stay Healthy!
    Cheers,
    Bill
