Seeking suggestions for professional development books/training

Hey ASCE! I just finished The Culture Code by Daniel Coyle and loved his thoughts on team building. I am looking for a new read or additional professional development training to consider. What would you recommend?

there are so many career resources out there - I highly recommend you check out the Society of Women Engineers programs. We've branded everything as "Leadership" lately but the business accumen courses may fit your interests.  Every section has a Professional Development track, usually with mentors, and just being with other women engineers from many disciplines and companies, is an empowering education in itself. The SWE.org website indicates that there are Sections in most states, including a Greater Salt Lake section, and student chapters at 4 UT universities from Provo to Logan.  Info seems to be open to all (genders, too) and SWE has affiliates if membership doesn't fit your style.

Thank you, Sarah! The online courses look great, especially the Strategic Leadership series. Do those courses have training specific to women in the industry or do you find that their material is more general? Either is great but I don't have much exposure to SWE. I may reach out to the local GSL chapter to plan a joint activity with the ASCE's Utah Section!

I have conducted numerous continuing education courses on the subject of leadership.  The most widely acknowledged reference on the subject of leadership is The Leadership Challenge by Kouzes and Posner.  And there is also the often-quoted book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey

I read and really enjoyed  Turn the Ship Around! by David Marquet. It combines the story of part of his military career with leadership lessons. It centers on creating a "leader-leader" model where employees have more ownership of their work and more accountability. I think it has some takeaways for those not in leadership positions yet, too.  The audio book is about 6.5 hours long.

David Marquet has another leadership book called Leadership is Language over how word choice with your team can impact decision-making and execution. It starts with a summary of the story in Turn the Ship Around! and sets up the rest of the book to get more into the details of the tips first discussed in the other book to more directly apply them to other situations at work. (In full transparency, I've only listened to the beginning of this one so far.)

Bookmarking Leadership is Language, thank you! That sounds right up my alley. On that note, do you find Marquet's tips are natural to incorporate into your leadership style while maintaining sincerity and vulnerability? I read Extreme Ownership from Jocko Willink who also had a military background and while I did learn a lot, I found some of the tips to be a little severe and inauthentic for the workplace.

Great question Anna and it's good to know that you are eager to develop yourself professionally for a leadership role.  My personal favorite is Dale Carnegie's How to Win Friends and Influence People.  While the original book may not be as relatable to our time, it is still a good read.  This book set me up to take the Dale Carnegie Course and years later I still have to go back the the Golden Book to remind of when things get tough.

    Good luck!

I suggest looking at "Sparking Your Inner Leader: A Practical and Passionate Perspective from the Mascot Who Became an Executive Coach" which was just published last month. I had the pleasure of working with the author, Keith Lewis, and found him outstanding on both professional and personal levels. There is no secret sauce for exceptional leadership, but I think Keith embodies the skills, character, and human connection that I feel are so important.

Many years ago, I conducted numerous continuing education courses/seminars throughout the country on the subject of Leadership.  By far, the authoritative leadership reference at the time was the book: The Leadership Challenge by Kouzes and Posner.  Interesting that the Leadership literature at the time also often quoted The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey.
