During my career, I worked for the Federal government in 6 different States - no PE license required. But while in Vermont, I was able to join a PE refresher class offered for State transportation engineers, and within one year I was a licensed PE in Vermont - best thing I ever did. Subsequently I obtained PE licenses in Maryland and Florida, and I retain all of them to this day even though retired now for almost 10 years. I look forward every year to keeping up my continuing education requirements with the free on-line seminars offered through ASCE. I would say this to a young engineer - your present position may not require you to be a licensed PE, but you have no idea what opportunities you may forego throughout your life by not obtaining your PE license. And by all means, create an account at The National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES), to document your credentials and to facilitate your PE application in other States.
