  • 1.  Looking for Advice on Networking and Job Opportunities with ASCE Members

    Posted 03-02-2026 01:17 PM

Hello everyone, I'm seeking advice on how to effectively connect with ASCE members to explore job opportunities and expand my professional network. If you have experience or tips on the best practices for reaching out to fellow members, attending events, or using ASCE resources like Thrive, I would greatly appreciate your insights. Thanks in advance for your help!

Hey Wajahath! Great question. I think it depends on where you want to grow your network. If you're looking for local contacts, local events are best. You can use https://www.asce.org/communities/find-a-group to find Branches and Sections near you, and they should have some great events to attend! If you're looking for more technical or global members to connect with, I highly recommend considering joining an ASCE committee. The deadline is this weekend so you'd have to be quick! But this has been one of the most rewarding experiences for me. You meet with other members regularly and they connect you with other members in their network. It's a great way to plug into the Society web of experts! Here is a website where you can see the full list of committees: https://www.asce.org/communities/committees

I will add onto Anna's response, that your local Section/Branch likely has a website with a jobs board, or maybe an email newsletter that advertises jobs, so don't miss that. The Sections and Branches sometimes have their own Younger Member Group (YMG)/Younger Member Forum (YMF) which is a great place to explore from student to young professional. The YMGs or YMFs usually have a website, social media, or email newsletter with their own events!

I agree with Anna and Leslie.  I have had success in the past getting jobs by just attending a local ASCE meeting and meeting new people.  It is important to make sure that you follow up with the people you meet and remind them where you met. If you are looking for something outside where you currently live, people in larger firms can connect you with other offices.

In addition, you can also look at joining an institute committee or three :)  They are a good way to meet people with similar interests and most of the committees are always looking for new members.

    Hi Anna, Leslie, and Rosanna,

Thank you all for the thoughtful advice-I really appreciate you taking the time to share your experiences. I'll definitely start exploring my local ASCE Section and YMG, and I'll also look into joining a committee before the deadline. It sounds like a great way to build meaningful connections and stay engaged with the profession.

I'm currently in my final semester of my Master's in Civil Engineering at Bradley University and actively preparing for the FE exam, which is scheduled soon. Alongside my studies, I've been working on pavement management and field inspection projects with Peoria County, which has given me valuable hands-on experience.

As I transition into full-time opportunities, I'd truly appreciate any advice or guidance you might have. If you happen to know of any openings or can point me in the right direction, I would be grateful. I'll also be sure to stay engaged and follow up as I start attending events and connecting with members.

Thank you again for your support!

    Best regards,

    Wajahath Hussain Syed
