What do others think about the new format?
Not to bias...
I know the changes to the Civil Engineering magazine are well-intended and followed a well-considered process, but I find the new format distracting and difficult to read. There are too many colors and boxes and lines. Furthermore, I find the content bleeds into the ads. I would like to see a return to the prior format.
I actually find the new format to be about as easy to read as before. It seems like the colors and format do more to separate sections from one another and provide consistency between pages and magazine editions. To me, these could be positive things.
However, I would agree that I am still partial to the older format as well, for other reasons. The new layout feels less creative and more formal to me. I think the older format seemed to give each article or section more freedom to have its own personality, if you will. I recall one article about a river where the river ran across both pages, and the text was spaced all around it. This is not something that I think the new layout would lend itself to making space for.
Maybe we are both just resistant to change? Haha.
I really like the new format. Colors make it vibrant and clearly distinguish sections and articles. Content has improved significantly since Ms. Mitchell took over and together with these changes create a livelier impression of our field, making it more attractive to students. Kudos.
