Well-integrated, diverse teams are more effective and resilient. A 2015 study from Bersin by Deloitte showed that diverse companies had 2.3 times higher cash flow per employee and a study by McKinsey shows that companies in the top quartile for gender diversity are 15 percent more likely to have financial returns above their national industry medians. Many leaders aim to create a diverse team, but in structural engineering women are underrepresented and a higher percentage leave the profession than their male peers.  

An upcoming panel at Structures Congress, Women in Structural Engineering Practice – Bridging the Numbers Gap was conceived to inspire honest dialogue on this topic.  The session is intended to be inclusive, and in fact will be most successful with a diverse group of attendees – both men and women. A panel of practicing structural engineers will discuss challenges women face, how employers can recognize and help mitigate obstacles, and strategies for career success. 

The panelists will address specific experiences and observed obstacles that women commonly face during their career progression. The audience will engage in round table discussions, and their feedback will inform a room-wide discussion  of best practices for employer and employee.  The session will include research data from the SE3 Project to support the dialogue.

This session will benefit engineers at all stages of their careers, from graduate engineer to managing partner, as the group discusses strategies to enable career engagement and employee retainment.
