  • 1.  Where to find repurposed Infrastructure - What can you share?

    Posted 06-03-2021 03:43 PM

I want to bring attention to this recent article in Source "Philadelphia to turn crumbling piers into a waterfront park" and see what folks can share on other infrastructure that has been repurposed? As a cyclist, I well aware of many rails to trails around the country and some of the more well known, like the Highline in NYC, but there must be countless examples. Your responses could provide for a nice travelogue!

I am managing the final 24.2 mile segment of the Fred Meijer Mid Michigan Trail system. The trail is 125 miles long from Alma southwest to Greenville south to Lowell then east to Owosso. It's all discontinued railroad right of way. The interesting part of this last piece is about 23 miles are surfaced with 3 1/2 inches of recycled hot mix asphalt. This is the first trail in Michigan approved to use this material. The surface is getting thumbs up from the bikers.

Seoullo 7017 Skygarden is a repurposed abandoned highway that is now a linear park in South Korea. I did a presentation on it as one of my recent masters courses on urban planning.
