    Hi all,

I would like to start a thread about the best practices on sustainable and resilient infrastructure.

I read the ASCE News titled "Global Partnership Positions ASCE to Lead Climate Change Mitigation Effort". The news is short and easy to read: https://news.asce.org/global-partnership-positions-asce-to-lead-climate-change-mitigation-effort/

The new International Coalition for Sustainable Infrastructure's 2020 activities include sharing knowledge and training on global best key practices, among others.

Abovesaid, what knowledge or training on global best key practices on sustainable and resilient infrastructure could you share?

From the news, ASCE signed an agreement to advance a coalition focused on several key points. Corresponding to one of the focused points:

What do you think the gaps and barriers for the planning, design, construction, maintenance and operation of sustainable and resilient infrastructure are?

    Every response is highly appreciated!

    Hi Jiqiu,

Thank you for sharing this article! I am so excited to hear about ASCE's partnership with the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy. Climate change is a topic that we can not avoid talking about. To keep this conversation moving and to understand the knowledge gaps, we need all stakeholders to help with awareness from civil engineers to political leadership.

I look forward to hearing from others regarding this topic!

Good day to all, what a nice topic to and I do agree as engineers we have a responsibility to to involve when it comes to climate change and how buildings perform during these conditions. I do look out for more information and comments coming from this forum.

    Hi Malik,

Thank you for bringing this conversation forward. (My thanks to Danielle as well.)

I would like to add an information of the ASCE India Conference on Challenges of Resilient and Sustainable Infrastructure Development in Emerging Economies. For our members who might want to attend, you can find more info. here: http://www.asceic2020.org/

I look forward to further comments and insight on this topic.

    Hi Jiqiu,

Great relevant topic. For everyone's information, Dr. Cris B. Liban from ASCE has been one of the individuals pushing for standards and best practices on sustainable infrastructure. Let me know if you wish to learn more.

Also, there are existing voluntary rating systems such as Envision, LEED, and Greenroads that provide many best practice principles.

One practice that I highly regard is the use of Life Cycle Assessment. Cradle to Grave methodology allows engineers to fully understand the long term impact of their projects.

    Best regards,

    Thank you, Paul!

For Life Cycle Assessment, is there a specific program that you recommend using?  I used SimaPro for a class during my Master's, but I am curious to hear if there are different programs used in the industry.

    Hi Paul,

Thank you for this great information. I'd like to learn more from Dr. Cris B. Liban if ever you could give me a favor on this. (My email add. is jameswang2014@....)

The rating systems you recommended will be of great value for us civil engineers to access the best practice of sustainability.

As for LCA, I'll add one file for further reference. It's produced by Scottish Authority on public works. For everyone's information, please see "Whole Life Appraisal Tool for Construction" herein.
