It was an honor to be a part of the ASCE panel last week Leading Teams and Fostering Relationships in a Virtual Environment wit Menzer Pehlivan, Ph.D., P.E. and Ken Mika, P.E. M.ASCE which you can find here.

I would love to hear other thoughts, questions or strategies you might share on this topic.

    Thank you!

Hi Anthony (and Ken & Menzer too),

I thought it was a great discussion. I think you all covered a nice range of important and relevant topics. I would encourage others to watch the video recast that has been posted on https://collaborate.asce.org/covid-19/thursday-three

Your respective remarks made me think my personal experience from running a global team and I offer the following thoughts to add to, and complement, the advice and insight you all shared. I see think a lot of the success that I had in working with my reports from afar was the occasional face time - even limited - that I was able to spend with them. This was an opportunity to get to know them and for them to get to know me and my style of working. This purpose of travel, while not always appreciated, can pay dividends in the long run. Other things. I found a setting a regular meeting slot to be useful for them and me. I would always go into it with an agenda of topics to be covered that I would ask them to send me in advance. This would focus the conversation and allow us to shorten or lengthen the meeting time as appropriate and help me ensure they were working on the right things. Finally, I would always be on the look out out or ask them about them about issues that were creating obstacles or taking undo time to resolve. We could discuss solutions or in cases I would take on if the issue fell more in my wheelhouse.

    Again, a great conversation!

Mitch great points, I especially like the last one about asking specifically where you can help.  I appreciate you sharing these!  I am going to author an article for the ASCE Careers & Leadership blog, I plan to reference you and your points. Let me know if you are not okay with that.  Thanks! - Anthony
