Calling all ASCE Runners, Joggers, and Walkers!

    Hello everyone,

I hope this message finds you and your families healthy and safe. We are in unprecedented times as a society, both professionally and globally. Many of us are under stay-at-home orders with exceptions for trips to the grocery store and to exercise. With these orders come cancellations of conferences, as you are likely aware, including the YMLS Alumni Summit (Mar 27-29), AEI Forum (April 1-3), and SEI Structures Congress (April 5-8), with others to come.

Some conferences have been able to shift their technical content online, so why not shift some of the other conference events online as well? The SEI Runners group formed at the 2012 Structures Congress in Chicago and have met each year since to run three to five miles before conference events. Even though we aren't able to run as a group this year, we would like to invite all ASCE members to participate in a run, jog, or walk, of any distance, during the dates that the SEI Runners group would have met, April 5-8. Feel free to participate at any time during the day on any or all of the days. Let's post data from Garmin Connect, Apple Watch, Strava, or any other forum in this thread. Route maps and selfies are welcome!

Please remember to follow local orders and restrictions and maintain social distancing of at least six feet from others. This should be a safe and healthy challenge and not one that puts anyone at risk. Stay safe, happy running/jogging/walking, and I'll see you online on April 5!

This is one of my favorite things to do each year at the Congress and I think the thing I will miss the most.  Thank you for making this virtual running group happen, I'm definitely in!

Best wishes to you all - stay safe and stay in shape!

    Hi everyone!

I'm sharing an example of some of what we might share from our virtual Structures Congress run. Have a great weekend, and happy running, jogging, and walking!

On my favorite five-mile route through the town arboretum west of Boston.  Social distancing not an issue here!
I'm not a competitive personality or anything, but this is not a race, right?

Sunday afternoon along my usual route in Westwood (near Boston) - I tried to match your distance of about 4.5 miles.  Birds chirping up a storm today, and lots of frogs in the pond spring is definitely arriving.

Was finally able to get out and run my normal 5 mile route up at my cabin on Camano Island (WFH does have a few advantages!).  The most important statistic regarding the route is the 300' elevation gain in 1200'.  Needless to say, I walk that portion!  Take care all!

Just finished my 2nd run of the conference.  It's unusual for many of us to get a run in on the first full day of the conference due to the Meet the Leaders Breakfast.  Grateful for the serendipitous run!

I did the treadmill this morning and watched "Inside Bill Gate's Brain", much of which is filmed near his home in Seattle - so I was with you in spirit my friend.  We'll be together next year in Seattle!

    Hey All,

I'm sorry I couldn't lead you around St. Louis today (or at least tell you where to go before you fly past).  While it had to be done, I know we are all are disappointed in the lack of Congress this year.  Not only for the great content, but your run route would have included 3, (count them), 3 ASCE Civil engineering landmarks (Gateway Arch, Eads Bridge, Union Station).  I made our virtual run today where our actual run would have been.  It was a little slow, but blame it on Hooper not being here to carry me for the last mile.

Hopefully your future travels will bring you here and you can make the run as well.

    Take care and be safe.

    Hello Chad,

I'm really disappointed that SC didn't happen this year, and I was very much looking forward to your route! What was the mileage? Perhaps SC can come to STL in the near future to make up for the loss!

    Happy running,
    Cherylyn

It was 3.5, but could be easily stretched to 4 by using the outside path at the Arch grounds....t5-6 mile people could take the Eads bridge at the north end of the Arch grounds across the river and back and get some extra in.

Guests are always welcom in STL!

    Hey all,

I definitely missed seeing you all again. I have been taking the YMLS national events and SEI Structures Congress for granted until they were cancelled this year. Thank you Cherylyn Henry for organizing this virtual group. I just finished listening to your podcast regarding this running group; and it was a fantastic recording to show that we as civil engineers want to connect through our common health and fitness goals besides our career goals.

As for me, I am living in the greater Houston area. There are many nearby trails and parks to jog, walk, or run. But to me, my biggest motivation is to jog about 3 miles almost daily is to visit my neighborhood's cat family. This is a family of 5, and it is hard to know how many of them are hanging out outside of the house each day.

    All the best,

The weather wasn't all that cooperative yesterday afternoon, but I was able to take a 30 minute walk for some fresh air. This is a shot of Symphony Park, the summer home of the Charlotte Symphony.

Hey everyone! I've been able to get outside for hilly runs the past three days (5-6 miles) thanks to finally having some sunny and warm days (a rarity here in Pittsburgh!). Wish we were all together in STL, but looking forward to seeing everyone at upcoming meetings, or at next year's congress. Hope everyone is staying safe and healthy!

It's hard to believe that the SEI Structures Congress in Atlanta is next week! For those of you attending in person, do you have an interest in a Friday morning run? Three to five miles? If so I'll map out a route and send out more information early next week. Happy running!
