Engaging the Community: Engineering Competition Teams and Professional Organizations

    Hello everyone,

I am interested in what an student engineer may do to get involved in the community outside of this collaborate forum. I am interested in team-based engineering competitions and professional organizations that I may join to develop my skills and gain great experience that I may add to my resume. Please let me know what everyone thinks about this matter.

    Thanks,
    John Schwartz

    John
I would highly recommend volunteering with a community based organization. The teamwork and leadership skills you will hone will prove far more valuable than any technical skills.  Figure out what charity you are passionate about. Is it helping kids, working with the homeless, helping the handicapped, or helping the environment. Best of luck.

    Hi John.
In addition to the resources ASCE makes available:

    • PMI.org
    • ASQ.org

Students receive a membership discount. Once in, join the city/local section/chapter
where you will meet like-minded women and men to build your network.

    Stay Healthy!
    Cheers,
    Bill

    John:

If you want to be more involved in the profession before graduation, consider joining the local ASCE chapter and participating in a committee that interests you. Some chapters have committees that focus on government affairs, or that compile the report card, or that discuss professional ethics.

    Best regards,

    Hi John,
Thank you for reaching out!  I encourage all my  mentees to participate in Robotics, Math and tech fairs-competitions. But it is a real challenge during the pandemic.
Have you virtual contacts with FIRST Robotics or MathCounts?
