  • 1.  How to start sizing the driven piles?

    @Hi all,

    I'm a fourth year undergraduate civil engineering student. And I'm currently working on my capstone project, where I have difficulties with the foundation design. I want to know about the design steps for driven piles, caissons, and raft-piles. Also, what parameters am I looking for exactly? It would be great if anyone can give me some reference readings on the topic.
    I appreciate for helping me out here.

    Hi,

    Foundation design and that too Pile foundation design is a very detailed topic and it will help to understand your problem if you can let us know at which step you need guidance.
    Pile foundation Design consists of several components starting from soil investigation report, which provides static and dynamic soil parameters, moving on to Pile design for Geotechnical capacity and structural design of Pile, and at the very end foundation design where in you would finalize the Pile layout and pile cap size and geometry, (thickness, reinforcement etc). The things get a little more complicate when you move on to lateral load pile analysis.

    A good starting point for all things foundations weather pile or otherwise  will be Bowles Book on Foundation Design and Analysis.

    Please come back with any specific GM challenges you wish to discuss.

    Best of luck for your project.
