The Parametric Genome

Data has become an essential tool for decision making in today’s modern world, across all industries. Clients are looking to engineers in all fields to deliver them the information necessary to make key business decisions and develop building designs. In the field of structural engineering, the presented data may vary; it may be structural steel tonnage for various floor framing configurations and column spacings, it may be economy scale applied to a repetitive connection type, it may be structural optimization for lateral drift or serviceability of a high-rise, or it may literally be anything else. The potential uses of data derived from computational, or computer-aided, algorithmic design are virtually limitless.

The computer-aided algorithmic design allows us, as designers, the ability to run millions (or even billions) of simulations to collect meaningful data. How this data is collected and presented is up to the user, but the ability to automatically run these simulations is there through the use of today’s computational power. During the presentation, we are going to touch on a few specific uses of algorithmic aided design; these examples are as follows:

1. Simple optimized parametric structural truss
2. Simple optimized parametric structural steel bay designed for gravitational forces
3. Drift and strength optimization of structural members in a high-rise commercial tower
4. Strength and deflection optimization of a parametric long-span dome roof
5. Strength, deflection, and economy of scale optimization of a parametric geodesic sphere
6. Applying economy of scale to repetitive structural steel connection types
a. Fabricated pieces
b. Castings

The possibilities of parametric design are relatively endless and we feel that all projects and firms, no matter how small or large, may benefit tremendously from this type of analysis and design methodology presented; our examples and toppings will also vary from simple to complex and offer unique opportunities for everyone in the audience to benefit from.

STEPHEN REICHWEIN
Upon obtaining an integrated MAE/BAE degree in Architectural Engineering from the Pennsylvania State University, Mr. Reichwein joined Severud Associates as a structural engineer in 2009. His assignments have included project management, inter-trade coordination, structural analysis and modeling, structural design, structural detailing, preparation of structural contract documents, construction administration, concrete special inspections, on-site presence/assistance, and forensic structural engineering.
Mr. Reichwein has developed vast knowledge and experience in parametric design and modeling utilizing innovative techniques and geometric base three-dimensional parametric software, such as Rhinoceros 3D, Grasshopper, Revit, and Dynamo. Additionally, Mr. Reichwein has vast experience with integration between geometric based three-dimensional parametric software and finite element structural analysis software, such as SAP, ETABS, and RAM Structural System.
Mr. Reichwein has obtained professional licensure upon successfully completing the nationally recognized NCEES Structural Engineering Examination (SE) and currently holds Professional Engineering (PE) licenses in New Jersey and New York, a Structural Engineering (SE) license in Nevada, and is certified by the Structural Engineer's Certification Board (SECB).

MR. CARLOS DE OLIVEIRA
Carlos is the founding Chief Executive Officer of Cast Connex Corporation, is the company’s Principal Structural Engineer, and is recognized as a foremost expert in the design and use of steel castings in building construction. Carlos received his Bachelor of Applied Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Waterloo and his Master of Applied Science in Structural Engineering from the University of Toronto. Carlos is the recipient of the Ontario Professional Engineers Engineering Medal for Entrepreneurship, the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering Excellence in Innovation in Civil Engineering Award, the Ontario Centres of Excellence Martin Walmsley Fellowship for Technological Entrepreneurship, the Heffernan/Co-Steel Innovation Fellowship, and the Comité International pour le Développement et l'Étude de la Construction Tublaire (CIDECT) President’s Award for Research, amongst other industry and academic awards, fellowships, and scholarships. Carlos is a registered professional engineer in the Provinces of Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta, and British Columbia.
