The recent issue of Structure has a great article on developing and commercializing an innovative connector for braced frames subject to seismic loading. The article From Idea to Industry methodically describes the sequence of activities required to deliver this product from an idea to a commercially available product. It should be mandatory reading for anyone with a good idea contemplating commercialization and monetization.
I am interested in hearing from the inventors about what they would do differently, knowing what they know today about the process and level of effort needed to commercialize their idea. As a corollary, I am interested in their views on opportunities they saw in hindsight to speed up the process.
The article struck a chord with me as someone experienced in product development, commercialization, and all the pitfalls.
