    In USA the Licensing process to become a P.E. or S.E. is totally different to that in LatinAmerican countries and it may become a lenghty process for out of country professionals. You may want to look at any State Board of Professional Engineers in USA, example Florida Board is noted below, where you could see for yourself the requirements to be licensed in a specific State, paperwork required, exams to be taken, education credentials, professional experience required, etc.

    Take a look at one individual State first or explore other States as well depending on which State you would be likely be looking to be licensed as a P.E. or S.E. to provide licensed  Engineering Services. Best Wishes.

    If you want to sit for the FE examination you have two choices to register: pre-approval from FBPE or direct registration with NCEES. Having passed the fundamentals exam, either in Florida or in another state, a person must apply for the PE examination to complete the process for professional licensure.

    For the United States, each state has different licencing requirements so you'll have to see what State you want.  As a minimum, I think all require the FE exam so that would be the first step.

    In the United States professional licenses are issued by the states not the Federal government and as a result the requirements are different in each state.  Typically you are required to provide several references from licensed engineers, have taken the Fundamentals of Engineering exam and an exam for the type of license you want,

    Most states use the same exams but some will require a supplemental exam on some topic.

    Once you are licensed in one state it is easier to get licensed in multiple states but most engineers are licensed in one or a few states.

    You should have a     discussion with an engineer licensed in the state you will be most interested in where you  talk about why you want to be licensed.

    I have my PE.
    You need 4 years of design experience after you pass your EIT/FE. The design experience should be related to codes.

    The write up to even sit for the exam should show you worked under the guidance of a PE with independent role in making designs, dwgs and calcs.

    all the best

    NCEES is the council  that tests and certifies the FE, PE and SE. Regarding to Saudi Arabia, there is SCE (saudi council of engineers) which allows you to take any test through it in a Prometric centre in Riyadh. No brainer, you have to be an active member in such a council to have this rights. As well in Egypt they have an organization allows Egyptian grads to take the exam through AUC (American University in Cairo) or EES (Egyptian Engineers syndicate). In your case, you have to be an active member in any of the organizations that allows you to take the exam which are listed in their website.
    Check NCEES official website on the following link: http://ncees.org/engineering/

    NCEES is only relevant to the extent a specific state says that it is relevant.  The rules vary widely from state to state.

    I cannot emphasize enough that licensing of engineers is a matter for the states.  This is not something the national government is involved with.

    Back in 2007, I created a NCEES record and after that, most states made it easy to apply using reciprocity. Kentucky had the best (New York the worse) customer service of the 9 states I applied. Not only did I apply on line and pay on line, my certificate of registration came in the mail about a week later.  Perhaps it was the timing of my application.  New york, on the other hand, after 2 months of waiting, I had to call to get a status and the answer was "sorry, the Board has not meet since November but we expect them to meet in January".

    Washington DC used a private company for licensing at the time and was kinda difficult to figure out how to apply.

    Pick your state wisely - some are easier to work in that others.

    I wonder whether is it fruitful to have PE if one is not working and residing in the US. Does it help?

    Hello Roberto,
    The NCEES requires candidates to have a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an EAC/ABET accredited program. you can visit Welcome to NCEES for more information.

    In addition you need to pass the FE exam, and most states also require four years of acceptable, progressive, and verifiable work experience in the industry.

    Then you will have to apply to the Board of Engineering in your state and pass the Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) Exam.

    I attached the 61G15-20.002 document that my states (Florida) uses to define what they mean by "Acceptable Experience".

    I went to this process with a degree from another country, but my experience was here in the states.

    Hope this helps.

    You must submit your qualifications to whichever state board you want a PE from and apply for license by comity.

    if you are from foreign country where your acquired your degree of engineering, you have to set an account with NCEES for evaluation of your credentials. NCEES will provide letter for your school credentials and your school will send it directly to NCEE.After getting an approval, you will be send it to the Local state board wherever state you want to take the License. FE exam is the first exam you will have to passed. after 4 years of working as EIT(Engineer in training) when you passed FE you can take the PE exam. But if your not an FE passer and work as Engineer in the field of Engineering you want to get licensed, 8 years before you can take the PE exam. Certificates and recommendations should be made by your company's  licensed PE.

    Roberto, I suggest you to contact the Texas board first, they will tell you how to proceed if is possible what you have in mind. The California board is another good option, but the examination process is more difficult due to the seismicity on that state.

    I am a engineer with 10+ years of experience in which good experience with American MNCs. If I come to USA and work there still after passing FE exam I have to wait for 4 years to give PE exam???

    1. You need your degree accredited (and translated into English) to be shown to be equivalent a US degree relevant to your field of engineering. If your degree is lacking in some areas (my colleague was short on Chemistry) you will need to do additional classes in your own time for the credits. You will also need to demonstrate proficiency in English if your degree was not taught in English;
    2. This will give you permission to sit the EIT exam;
    3. Which gives you permission to sit the PE exam;
    4. (Different states have different durations/experience requirements for each of these stages; not all states require 4 years between, some just require 4 years in your career - you will need to provide an experience timeline, confirmation of employment from past employers, professional references)
    5. Different states have different residency requirements to issue your license. NY needs a green card minimum, Connecticut has no residency requirements. Check with your favourite state for specifics;
    6. California requires you to sit additional tests: local law, surveying, seismic.
    7. SE is the same as above, though some states require a PE beforehand, some states don't, others don't recognise the SE as a separate license. Check with your favourite board;

    Source: I went through this process coming from the UK: the NCEES did out my degree accreditation (there are other organisations), EIT was done in NJ, PE in CT, transferred by committee through NCEES Records to CA, sat and passed CA local exams.

    It's a long process.
