Thank you! This a a great topic.
The dispute over use of a continuous top rail across the glass guards continues. Code and good engineering practice states that a top rail should be provided regardless if laminated glass is used or not. Architects might insist that they do not wish to see any top rail. Are 2 handrail brackets per panel or brackets installed between panels good practice or questionable?
Other topics of discussion that I have encountered include:
- analysis of stresses in glass supported by buttons
- differential deflection of glass to prevent pinching
- loads that could be present on glass partitions (floor to ceiling acting as fall protection or not)
- exposed edges of laminated glass prone to vandalism
- size limitations of glass, availability, thickness, weight, handling
- coping and drilling glass

Hello Dr. Mokarram Aydenloo
Thank you for your reply on this topic.
Dr. Morse is one of our faculty members here at Michigan Technological University who will be talking about his expertise in Architectural and Structural use of Glass. As mentioned in the first post, we are hosting a FREE online presentation of his for all ASCE members. You can use the link to sign on Feb 27th. If you or any ASCE member have a specific question regarding this topic, we will convey that to Dr. Morse to address that during the presentation. Moreover, we will be having a Q&A at the end of the presentation. I highly encourage you and other members to watch our previous presentation on youtube with the link below:

We are thrilled to announce our second episode of the SEI GSC at Michigan Technological University's Professional Presentation Series. Our first episode of these series featured Dr. Daniel Dowden on Earthquake Resistant to Seismically Resilient, Diverging from the Disposable Building.
In our second episode, we have Dr. Stephen Morse who will be talking about ARCHITECTURAL AND STRUCTURAL USE OF GLASS. This episode has been scheduled for Feb 27th, 4 PM EST. Anyone can join online using the link below. I would like to start the discussion here. What questions do you have about the structural and architectural use of glass?
