    ​I have been asked what are the design wind loads in Mongolia.  Does anyone have suggestions for where this information can be obtained.

    Hi David,

    Since the power of wind differs in each region, the design wind load are specified according to each country's loading code.
    So I guess you have to look for this kind of source.

    There is a UFC document that has design values for seismic, wind and snow for American military installations located in the U.S. and abroad. It's UFC 3-301-01, Structural Engineering. https://www.wbdg.org/FFC/DOD/UFC/ufc_3_301_01_2013_c3.pdf
    Unfortunately, I'm not sure if there would be anything specific to Mongolia. Additionally, you can check ATC as thy may have some design wind speeds for regions outside of the U.S.

    The paper of the link that follows references design wind pressures for a wind turbine in Mongolia.
    The authors of that paper (included email addresses) come from Mongolia.
    They should be able to give you the answer, if the information in that paper is not sufficient

    The wind loads of ASCE 7-16 for Dade County, Florida should cover those possible for Mongolia.

    David,
    I didn't see a wind speed for Mongolia in John Holmes' book, so I expect you'll need to reference the Chinese and Russian wind maps, since they are immediately south and north. Finding and harmonizing those may be the biggest challenge of your project!

    Your suggestion of using the Chinese and Russian wind standards is a good idea ( one I actually used)  Mongolia is a big hole for wind information except for mine sites.

    The conversion back to units is a challenge and the greater challenge providing the design at the level of safety required by the country.

    Collecting international wind standards is an on going project of mine.

    Hi David,

    I think you could check local wind speed in Mongoloa (airport, local weather department) and topographic condition in the area where you´re designing in Mongolia.
    Of course, the specs in ASCE 7-16 helps you in order to get wind speed, but local conditions are important.

    Hi David 
    It's located in the southern Gobi Desert, 500km south of the Mongolian capital Ulaanbaatar, the 50MW wind farm site comprises approximately 72km of remote, open desert and an isolated mountain location. The Mongolian weather is so extreme that the site closes over the winter months when temperatures drop to -25°C, while in the summer the site bakes in up to 40°C.
