    There is significantly more fact-based information about this subject

    that is not within the ASCE files.

    • Suggestion:

    Place the expression "Bike Lane Safety" in "Google Scholar" and if available,

    use your university library's online search.

    • Summary of my brief search:

    Turns out the results for "Bike Lane Safety" vary based on factors

    within and out of the control of the bike rider.

    Building bike-friendly communities takes the will and commitment of all involved. Bike infrastructure is insufficient if it is not supported by laws to protect vulnerable road users and knowledge and willingness to enforce laws by authorities charged with law enforcement. Bike infrastructure is also meaningless without an ongoing commitment to keep the lanes free and clear of debris and the resources for regular maintenance. And then, there is the most challenging piece, the cultural acceptance of bicycles as a primary mode of transportation. Cyclists must follow the laws, too. As an avid cyclist, I often prefer riding in traffic lanes over using the dedicated bike infrastructure for my safety.

    Mitch,

    The 5th edition to the AASHTO Guide to the Development of Bicycle Facilities is also being released this month. It represents the latest state of the practice, and incorporates additional/new facility types like separated bike lanes, bicycle boulevards, and rural bikeways and goes into much more detail on every step in the design development process from planning and facility type selection through maintenance of the constructed facility.
