The subject of the duration of the yellow traffic signal and its relationship to the red-light camera industry agitates the traffic engineering profession as well as any driver who got flashed by a red-light camera.   While the police, red-light camera industry and traffic engineering profession blame the driver for running red lights and crashing, physics proves otherwise.   Physics proves that the problem is the traffic engineer's "ITE yellow change interval equation".   Literally by the laws of physics, the way traffic engineers use this equation creates systematic failures at every traffic signal.   The flaws eventually force all drivers to unintentionally run red lights.

I have presented this topic at a local North Carolina ASCE luncheon in the past.   Now the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE) has asked me to do a series of webinars on the topic.  I believe many of you will enjoy this. Are there any questions you would like to see discussed in the webinar?

For the P.E., each webinar is worth 1 PDH.  You may register for Part II here:
