  • 1.  Replacement for ASTM 2434?

    Hello,

ASTM 2434 "Standard Test Method for Permeability of Granular Soils (Constant Head)" was withdrawn in 2015 without a replacement. What test methods have people been using alternatively? As an intern at a company, I was asked to look into a replacement, but have been finding that people have just been using the same standard despite it being withdrawn.

I am most familiar with the use of this standard in the landfill engineering context, because the test is often used to qualify sand and gravel for use as drainage media. Currently, most labs I know continue to use the old standard. There is not a suitable replacement test method available in the other standards.

I also am a member of the ASTM committee (D18) that is responsible for the review and adoption of standards for these tests. There are currently two efforts in progress. One, which has been ongoing since 2013, is to write a new standard that includes this test as well as a number of improvements to bring the standard into compliance with ASTM requirements. Unfortunately, the draft standard has been held up due to multiple comments and revisions. The second effort is to reinstate the old standard as a stopgap measure until the new standard is adopted. A committee ballot was held this year on both efforts. A number of significant comments were received. Therefore, I do not expect to see a replacement standard soon. The withdrawn standard is likely to be used by labs in the interim.

You may look at USBR 5600 to see if that works for your lab. This is a procedure we commonly follow although it is also an older standard.

Isn't the issue related to the use of rigid-wall permeameters? They are known to skew the actual permeability result. Resorting to flexible-wall permeameters may be sufficient.

There is also D5856 in which you run the test in a compaction mold.  Same problems as D2434 but may act as a stop-gap until D2434 is re-issued.

    Paige,

I actually went through the same a month ago with the same standard. The ASTM staff are very helpful (you can reach them directly) and told me that the standard was being reinsteated and was in the process of balloting at that time. They had the ASTM meetings a week ago so it is still too soon for them to have anything official but you could reach them again if you are in a rush.

(for me the standard was only a referece so I didn't need anything else).

    Best regads,
