  • 1.  Alternative to Biochar Filled Socks

    Posted 12-20-2017 04:54 PM
I am looking for an alternative to 6" diameter biochar filled socks. These socks are placed under riprap and extend up a river bank until the x-year storm elevation is reached. The socks are currently being used because they come pre-made and will be easy to lay down and install. Another alternative being proposed is mixing the biochar with gravel and laying this down, but this is extra effort and concern about the biochar "floating" away is present. Also the biochar would have to be wetted after installment in this scenario. The need for another alternative is in some scenarios the riprap must extend much higher along the bank; in these scenarios over 10 rows of 6" socks will be needed in contrast to the typical 2 to 3 rows when the idea was first originated.

    Any ideas?
    Thanks all!

    Hey Darrell
What is the purpose of the biochar socks?

Darrell,  Another alternative would be an activated carbon-filled geotextile mat, such as Tektoseal Active AC.  This geocomposite comes in a 16 foot width, but can easily be cut to the desired width with a utility knife. If you are interested, you can contact me at (704) 491-6931 and we can discuss your site requirements in more detail. - Jim
