  • 1.  Diplomates – How has being Board Certified Helped You?

    Posted 10-20-2017 10:13 AM

Hey folks, I need some help. I am writing a short article for an ASCE committee and wanted some anecdotal stories as how being Board Certified may have helped you.

Did you get a raise when you became a Diplomate? Has it helped you get a job? Have you seen RFQ's or RFP's looking for that qualification? Any other benefit you have accrued?

(Besides being able to say you are "Board Certified" – which is pretty neat all by itself)

I have received both a raise at my current firm and two unsolicited proposals due to being a Diplomate in Navigation Engineering. Well worth my time and effort!

    Karen,

Working for a public agency I did not see a raise nor would I see RFPs or RFQs.  The D.WRE certification, while fairly recent for me, has helped provide some "street creed" so to speak.  I deal with a lot of people of all sorts, property owners, contractors, Engineers, elected officials, attorneys, non-profits and local businesses.  For some that know that the D.WRE is it helps directly establish some credibility for others that might not know what it is, including the general public, it has started discussions always working to my benefit.  It has also helped in the same manner working with the local ASCE or other Professional Groups and non-profits in the same manner.

I have to agree with what MIchael Buechter said. Governmental bodies are notorious for not recognizing the value of employee's certifications, in general.

I was working for local government when I obtained my PE license, and even that did not provide sufficient incentive for the county commissioners to grant me a pay increase. That is why I am working in the private sector.

    David,
Have you considered becoming a Diplomate, yet, now that you are in the private sector?

    Karen,

Being a Board Certified Port Engineer was helpful in securing the job I have today, and has helped in my acceptance in the role of National Ports Practice Leader for Mott MacDonald in North America.  The board certification provided me credibility during the hiring process, as well with my new colleagues.  Our firm believes in board certification, and we have a number of engineers that have become Diplomates in Port and Coastal engineering. We feel it provides our clients a level of confidence in the quality of staff working on their projects, and a demonstrates a commitment to the specialty fields we work in.
