Abstract: Numerous tunnels and deep shafts have been constructed in Georgia over the past 30 years for water and wastewater conveyance as well as transportation infrastructure. This presentation will describe the primary construction methods used for excavation, ground support, and permanent linings. Several representative projects will be highlighted, including tunnels excavated using tunnel boring machines (TBMs), drill‑and‑blast methods, the Sequential Excavation Method (SEM), and microtunneling.

An overview of key design considerations for tunnels in Georgia will be provided, including geological and geotechnical conditions of the Piedmont Region and how these conditions influence design decisions, construction method selection, and overall project risks.

Speaker Bio: Andrew Bursey is a Global Principal for Tunneling at Jacobs Solutions and leads Jacobs’ Atlanta Tunnel Group. He specializes in tunnel and shaft design and underground construction. He holds an M.S. in Geotechnical Engineering from Virginia Tech and a B.S. in Geological Engineering from Queen’s University, Canada. He is a member of ASCE’s Geo‑Institute and SEI, and the Underground Construction Association (UCA).

Andrew has contributed to major underground infrastructure projects across North America and internationally, including TBM tunnels, SEM and drill‑and‑blast tunnels, and deep shafts. His expertise spans ground characterization, excavation support and linings, contracts, risk management, and construction‑phase engineering. He has been involved in tunneling in Georgia for over 25 years.
