FRANCIS C. TURNER LECTURE

Advancing Asphalt Pavements Through Mechanistic
and Microstructure Analysis

Wednesday, September 28, 2022 | 12 PM - 1 PM ET

Presented by Dr. Eyad Masad, Ph.D, P.E., F.ASCE
2022 Recipient of the Francis C. Turner Award

The past two decades have witnessed rapid increase in computing power, advances in computational models to study multi-physics problems, developments of material characterization tools at very high resolution, and, more recently, the development of artificial intelligence (AI) methods for material discovery. The Turner lecture will give an overview of the role of these developments in advancing the performance of asphalt pavements. More specifically, it will provide detailed examples of how these methods have contributed to optimizing asphalt pavement design, bridging the links between material microstructure and performance, and development of engineered asphaltic materials. The lecture will also outline a research and education roadmap that integrates mechanistic models, AI capabilities, and microstructure-characterization methods with the aim of developing resilient and sustainable asphalt pavements.

About Dr. Masad

Dr. Eyad Masad is a professor in the Zachry Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Texas A&M University and a professor in the Mechanical Engineering Program at Texas A&M at Qatar. Dr. Masad is a fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Dr. Masad research focuses on multiscale characterization and modeling of infrastructure materials. He has published more than 400 technical papers and reports including more than 220 journal papers. Dr. Masad is the recipient of several national and international awards in recognition of his academic and research achievements. Among these awards are the Francis C. Turner Award (2022) from the Transportation and Development Institute of ASCE, Monismith Lecture Award (2022) from the Geo-Institute of ASCE, and the James Laurie Prize (2019) from ASCE. He has been a consultant for major projects in the United States and Middle East. These projects involve pavement analysis and design, forensic evaluation of pavement damage, soil stabilization, material characterization, and development of quality control and quality assurance systems.
