Abstract: Trace concentrations of per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) continue to challenge water resources across the world due to their persistence in the environment and recalcitrance to water and wastewater treatment processes. The USEPA is matching this challenge with historic regulation: six PFAS are currently regulated in finished drinking water with more regulatory efforts expected in waste streams and wastewater discharges. These growing regulations stem from links between PFAS occurrence and potential human health risks associated with reproductive and childhood development effects, and potentially some increased cancer risks.
This presentation will highlight sources of PFAS in the environment, the fate and transport within the environment, and what water treatment utilities are doing to eliminate PFAS in drinking water supplies. This presentation will highlight relevant case studies from utilities starting forensic investigations to determine when and where PFAS discharges to their source waters might have begun. Further, fate and transport investigations will be used highlight the accumulation and/or removal of PFAS in drinking water treatment system. Finally this presentation will answer how utilities can cost-effectively manage PFAS to provide safe drinking water while keeping water rates low.
Dr. Murray is Hazen and Sawyer's national PFAS subject matter expert where for the last 4 years, his work has focused on all things PFAS. He specializes in the treatment of PFAS from impacted water and wastewater matrices. He completed his PhD on PFAS treatment from Colorado School of Mines and is a PE in Colorado.
