Pressuremeter and Foundation Design - NEW

When:  Jun 2, 2021 from 11:30 AM to 01:00 PM (ET)
Description

System Requirements for Viewing this Course

INSTRUCTOR: Jean-Louis Briaud, Ph.D., P.E., Dist. M. ASCE

Webinar Brief

The pressuremeter can be very helpful in foundation engineering to reduce the amount of conservatism associated with more conventional design. The reason is that the pressuremeter is essentially a load test on the soil under in situ stresses. The use of the pressuremeter can only be optimized when one is aware of its advantages and limitations in foundation design. This is the purpose of this webinar.

In a first part, shallow foundation design is covered including ultimate capacity and settlement. In a second part, deep foundation design is addressed including axial capacity of single piles, axial capacity of groups of pile, horizontal bahevior of single piles and horizontal behavior of groups of piles. Speacial loading is also addressed including long term creep loading, cyclic loading, downdrag, impact horizontal loading, presence of a nearby slope or trench. The pressuremeter is not helpful for slope stability design and has limited application for retaining wall design, liquefaction, and shrinking and swelling soils. The advantages and limitations of the test are presented to optimize the engineer’s decision of when it is best to use this in situ test.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Explain preliminary design of shallow foundations under vertical loading
  • Explain preliminary design of deep foundations under vertical loading
  • Explain preliminary design of deep foundations under horizontal loading

Benefits for Participants

Get an edge on your competition by using a tool which generally leads to less costly foundations while maintaining safety criterions. This tool also will allow you to predict behavior otherwise difficult to predict such as cyclic horizontal loading.

Assessment of Learning Outcomes

Achievement of the learning objectives will be assessed through a short post-test.

Who Should Attend

  • Geotechnical Engineers
  • Structural Engineers
  • Design Engineers

Outline

  • Performing a pressuremeter test
  • Reducing the pressurememter test data
  • Design of shallow foundations under vertical load
  • Design of deep foundations under vertical load
  • Design of deep foundation under horizontal load
  • Special design cases including downdrag, long term loading, cyclic loading

How to Earn your CEUs/PDHs

In order to receive your certificate of completion, you will need to complete a short, on-line post-test within 30 days of viewing this course.
