The Role of Field Vane Shear Test in Geotechnical Engineering and Recent Advancements

Description: The field vane shear test (FVT) is one of the most widely used in-situ geotechnical testing methods for determination of the undrained shear strength of cohesive soils. Originally introduced in 1919, use of the FVT was further developed in the 1940s (Carlson, 1948; Skempton, 1948; Cadling and Odenstad, 1950). In current practice, it remains the only direct measurement of the in-situ yield undrained shear strength (su) and remolded undrained shear strength (sur). The presentation discusses the traditional equipment and test as well as recent enhances to the testing methodology to obtain more accurate measurements of undrained shear strength. Further, recent advances with the development of the piezovane, a device capable to measure pore-water pressure during the vane shear tests are presented and discussed in detail.

Registration is for in-person attendance only. We hope to see you there!
