ASCE NCS Field Trip - Tour of Florida Avenue NE-New York Avenue NE Intersection Project

When:  Apr 23, 2026 from 01:00 PM to 03:00 PM (ET)
Associated with  National Capital Section
Join us for a technical field trip on Thursday, April 23, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM to explore the transformation of one of Washington, DC’s most complex and historically hazardous intersections. Originally part of Pierre Charles L’Enfant’s 1791 plan, the intersection of Florida Avenue and New York Avenue NE long suffered from confusing geometry, heavy traffic volumes, and high crash rates. This tour will be technically guided by DDOT and consultant project managers.
After years of study, public engagement, and interagency collaboration, the intersection was completely reimagined to improve safety, mobility, and community space. The project now features a reconfigured intersection serving over 46,000 vehicles per day, enhanced pedestrian and bicycle facilities, ADA-compliant design, upgraded traffic signals, and protected bike lanes.
Beyond transportation improvements, the project created three new public spaces—now known as Mamie “Peanut” Johnson Plaza—transforming the area into a vibrant community hub while incorporating sustainable design elements such as green infrastructure, stormwater management facilities, and over 100 newly planted trees.
This field trip will highlight the engineering challenges, design innovations, and multi-agency collaboration that made this transformative urban infrastructure project possible.
This project received the ASCE NCS 2026 Transportation Engineering Merit Award.
This NCS event is hosted by Reston Branch.
Please register by noon on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, so we can finalize event arrangements. We will provide the meeting location near the project site on Wednesday, April 22, 2026 by email.
We look forward to seeing you at the field trip!
