Probabilistic infrastructure damage, debris forecasting, and community resilience analysis for CSZ earthquake and tsunami applied to Seaside, Oregon

Brought to you by the COPRI Coastal Engineering Sciences Committee
Chair - Christopher Bender, Ph.D., P.E., D.CE, M.ASCE

Presenter: Dan Cox, Ph.D., Aff.M.ASCE

Bio:

CH2M Hill Professor in Civil Engineering

Education: B.S., M.S., Ph.D., University of Delaware Civil Engineering

Research and Interests: Dr. Cox’s research focuses on community resilience to coastal hazards, including tsunami and hurricane surge and waves inundation in the built and natural environments. He conducts research on tsunami and wave impacts on near-coast structures, tsunami evacuation and life safety, sediment transport and erosion, and nature-based solutions for coastal hazards mitigation.

Abstract:

Probabilistic seismic and tsunami damage analysis (PSTDA) evaluates the combined impacts of earthquake and tsunami through a stochastic approach that accounts for the accumulated damage due to seismic shaking and subsequent tsunami inundation. A case study is set up and applied to Seaside, Oregon.  Effects of tsunami debris transport for vulnerability assessment under multi-hazard earthquake and tsunami are presented.  Finally, a probabilistic decision-support framework for community resilience is discussed, incorporating multi-hazards, infrastructure interdependencies, and target community objectives in a Bayesian network.
